About the adventure

The Starbound Realms: Legends of the Astral Expanse is a long-form space-fantasy campaign where classic D&D races—elves, dwarves, orcs, humans, and more—have carried their ancient cultures beyond their homeworld and into the stars. The Astral Expanse is a vast frontier of ruined empires, drifting worlds, silent suns, and technology so advanced it feels divine. In this universe, magic and science are inseparable, and the past is never truly gone. This is a story-driven, character-focused campaign. Your backstory, choices, and relationships actively shape the world around you. You may begin as explorers, mercenaries, exiles, or survivors, but over time you will uncover truths that challenge everything your people believe about gods, history, and destiny. There is no single “correct” path—only decisions, consequences, and a universe that responds. The tone blends epic space opera, classic fantasy, and emotional roleplay. Expect cinematic combat, meaningful exploration, moral dilemmas, and moments of quiet reflection between the chaos. Battles are dramatic and intentional, but just as much weight is placed on negotiation, discovery, and long-term character arcs. This is a campaign where victories can be costly, and survival alone is sometimes a triumph. The setting draws inspiration from iconic science-fiction worlds such as Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Krull, Foundation, Blade Runner, I, Robot, and Ghost in the Shell, while remaining deeply rooted in traditional fantasy inspired by classic epic and mythic fantasy traditions—ancient legends, fallen empires, and heroes shaped by choice, sacrifice, and legacy (The Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire, ancient Greek epic stories, etc). Ancient cultures, mythic struggles, and heroes shaped by choice—not prophecy—define the heart of the story. This campaign is ideal for players who enjoy immersive storytelling, long-term character development, and worlds that feel alive and reactive. New players are welcome, and experienced players will find a fresh take on D&D that rewards creativity, curiosity, and emotional investment. Heroism is not assumed here—it is earned, slowly, beneath the watching stars.

Character creation

Creating your character

We will have a first session of character creation. You are welcome to bring your ideas and preconceived characters. There, we can discuss which books we can use. If you have PDFs of DnD 5ed third-party sources, you can share them with me, and we can talk about them.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need a Discord, a DnD Beyond, and an Owlbear Rodeo account (they're free).

What Luis brings to the table

I provide a cinematic, immersive roleplaying experience built around strong storytelling, emotional character arcs, and a world that reacts meaningfully to your choices. This is a long-term campaign where actions matter, consequences persist, and your character’s story is treated as a core part of the narrative—not an afterthought. You can expect curated ambient music and soundscapes, visual references, maps, and handouts that help bring the Astral Expanse to life. I use light character voices and expressive narration to enhance immersion (never mandatory or awkward), and I actively adapt scenes to the tone of the moment—quiet and reflective when needed, intense and dramatic when stakes rise. Combat is cinematic and intentional, not a numbers-only exercise. Tactical choices matter, but the focus is on clarity, momentum, and dramatic impact rather than excessive rules complexity. I embrace the Rule of Cool with consequences: creative ideas are encouraged, but bold actions may carry risks that shape the story. I run games with a collaborative mindset. I respect the rules as a foundation, but narrative logic, character intent, and player creativity guide final decisions. My goal is for every player to feel heard, engaged, and invested—whether through roleplay, strategy, exploration, or storytelling. Above all, I aim to create a safe, welcoming, and reliable table where players know what to expect: consistent pacing, clear communication, and a shared commitment to telling a memorable story together.

Homebrew rules

I use a light, intentional set of homebrew rules designed to enhance cinematic play, narrative impact, and immersion—without adding unnecessary complexity or altering core D&D mechanics. Money has no weight. Wealth is tracked narratively and mechanically, but never limits exploration or pacing due to encumbrance. Critical Hits deal double damage and trigger a cinematic special effect, such as weakening an enemy, opening an ally’s next attack, or creating a dramatic narrative advantage. Critical Failures result in a mild setback, such as losing your reaction, suffering disadvantage on your next roll, or causing a brief narrative complication—never harsh or punitive. Resurrection always leaves a permanent mark. Returning from death changes a character in some way—physically, emotionally, or mystically—reflecting the cost of crossing that threshold. We will also have a simplified system of spaceship battles. In addition, this campaign includes setting-based adaptations that reskin fantasy elements into a space-fantasy framework without changing how the rules function: Traditional weapons are reimagined as laser bows, arc rifles, plasma pistols, and vibrating or energy blades, using existing D&D weapon statistics. Spells are explained through advanced technology, such as nanomachines, psionic amplification, or reality-altering energy fields. Gods and religions manifest as ancient AIs, cosmic entities, or alien intelligences, while clerical magic and divine powers function mechanically the same. These adaptations are purely narrative and thematic—no additional rules burden is placed on players. The goal of these homebrew elements is to support creativity, clarity, and immersion, keeping the game fast, dramatic, and emotionally resonant while remaining fully compatible with D&D 2024.

Safety

How Luis creates a safe table

I prioritize emotional safety and clear boundaries in every game. Before the campaign begins, I send a Lines & Veils document where players can privately note themes they want limited or excluded. During Session 0, we discuss expectations, preferred tones, comfort levels, and any topics that should be avoided. I establish table norms for respectful play, spotlight balance, and handling conflict. During sessions, players who feel uncomfortable can say so. This can be typed in chat, sent privately through message, or signaled verbally or on video—whatever is most comfortable for the group. I check in at the start and end of every session to make sure everyone feels engaged and safe. If I notice a player becoming quiet, uneasy, or withdrawn, I reach out privately after the game to check in and adjust the story or tone as needed. My goal is to create an environment where every player feels respected, heard, and able to enjoy the experience fully. Your comfort and well-being are always part of the design of the adventure.
