About the adventure
You have arrived in the rustic frontier town of Phandalin, nestled in the foothills of the Sword Mountains southeast of the great city of Neverwinter. You find a small board nailed to a post in the town square, and you begin to read the handwritten notices displayed there. You choose a quest from among these notices and imagine the danger, treasure, and intrigue that await you as you begin your adventuring career! Welcome to "D&D School", where we will use the official published adventure "Dragon of Icespire Peak" as a setting for whatever you want to learn. Here are some of the courses I offer: 1. "D&D Q&A" - Zero prior knowledge required. We'll demonstrate the basics of exploration, role-play, and combat to provide you a framework where you can ask questions. You are encouraged to take the lead as much as you want, or you can just spectate. 2. "Character Building 101" - Discuss the choices involved in character-building and then build a character using D&D Beyond. I will guide you through the process and provide situational context as we break down the pros and cons of your choices. 3. "Class Test Drive" - Try two different classes before you make the big decision. Play them through a guided, modified quest intended as a comparison of different classes in combat. 4. "Subclass Test Drive" - Try two subclasses of one class before you make the big decision. Play them through a guided, modified quest intended as a comparison of the different subclasses in combat. 5. "Trial by Fire" - Try the real thing! Choose and complete an unmodified quest from the Phandalin job board, complete with all its perils and mysteries. Use your character or one of mine. 6. "Target Practice" - Your character visits a powerful illusionist-for-hire who magically creates a safe, controlled environment for simulated combat encounters. Dial up monsters on-demand, pause or rewind the action, change monster behavior, or even use predetermined dice rolls! My sessions are best for a single player, but D&D is a group game. My trusty sidekick characters will therefore join and support your character wherever needed. You are the focus and all the decision-making is still 100% yours. They're just here to give you a boost to climb over that wall, and to make sure your character isn't immediately killed in combat. We can do two players as well if you know each other and have agreed with one another about which course you want. Please have one person sign up and then I can add the second person.

About me
I started my D&D journey when the 2024 books came out and I haven't looked back. Life is a busy place but I always keep a few hours a week listed here on StartPlaying because helping new players always brightens my week! I dream of someday DMing a weekly game of dedicated, like-minded players.

Creating your character
Character creation depends on what kind of session you want: 1. "D&D Q&A" - no character required. 2. "Character Building 101" - no character required. 3. "Class Test Drive" - You must build two Lvl1 or Lvl2 characters in advance using the D&D Beyond Character Builder. Don't put to much work into details like physical characteristics, backstory, etc.. 4. "Subclass Test Drive" - You must build two Lvl1 or Lvl2 characters in advance using the D&D Beyond Character Builder. Don't put to much work into details like physical characteristics, backstory, etc.. 5. "Trial by Fire" - You may bring any Lvl2-Lvl4 character you have built in advance using D&D Beyond, or choose one in advance that I have prepared. 6. "Target Practice" - You may bring any Lvl1-Lvl5 character you have built in advance using D&D Beyond, or choose one in advance that I have prepared.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You need two basic things to play D&D online in general: 1) A way to talk to the DM and other players. 2) A way to see a combat map and roll virtual dice together with the DM and other players. This is a Virtual Tabletop (VTT). For the voice, almost everyone uses Discord. It's free to make an account and we can use that. If it's just us in a one-on-one, we can also use a free Zoom call. For the VTT, I use D&D Beyond so you will need a free account for that as well. You'll need this account no matter what, anyway. It's where the universally preferred character builder is. It also houses the digital version of all official D&D published content. Some content is free once you have an account. It also has a free copy of the basic rules so you can easily look things up.
What Logan brings to the table
I will provide official D&D map content in the VTT. If we use Discord I can pipe in some music too but that is up to you. Otherwise, our "game" will be pretty basic since my sessions are intended as basic lessons. If we run a full unmodified quest, I will act less as an instructor and more as a full-service DM. I will endeavor to provide a "normal" game experience more like what you will find elsewhere out there complete with NPC voices to the best of my ability, open-world role-play, background music, imagery of places, monsters, or items via the VTT, etc.

How Logan creates a safe table
I'll ask for your lines and veils at the start of our session. Being a basic starter module, the themes are pretty mild.
