About the adventure

Looking to get into LANCER, the mech tabletop RPG, but don't know where to start? Feeling overwhelmed by the frankly dizzying amount of rules, dense terminology, and dozens upon dozens of mech options? Never mind just making your character, how are you supposed to convince your friends to play with you if things are this hard to understand? Fear not, that's what I hope to alleviate with this game. A tutorial mission to on-board new pilots who want to try LANCER, but don't quite understand all the ins-and-outs of the rules, the moment-to-moment combat system, or simply can't get enough people together to give the system an honest try. Whatever your reasons are, I want to invite you to come try out one of the most exciting, invigorating combat systems I've had the pleasure of running for a long time. LANCER is a highly customizable, deeply rewarding, combat-heavy mech game, and I want everyone to be able to try it for themselves, especially those who are trying to just grok the system so they can share it with their own groups for a change of game-scenery. So if you think you're ready to get in the pilot seat of your mech and drop into the combat zone, this game is for you.

About me

A decade long GM of 5e, alongside other major systems such as Lancer, Pathfinder and Shadowdark, as well as smaller, focused systems like Break!!, Into The Odd, DURF, and more. I love getting groups together to explore less popular systems that might appeal to their specific tastes, but also really love walking new interested people through the more popular/easily accessed systems so they can experience tabletop for themselves! I try to foster as friendly an environment as possible at my tables and have no patience for disruptive or otherwise inflammatory behavior. I strongly encourage players to simply interject or interrupt me when they feel it prudent to interact with a scene, and to help build the narrative as much as they possibly can so they don't feel railroaded or pigeonholed in any one decision. I look forward to playing with you and sharing stories together!

Character creation

Creating your character

Create your characters on COMP/CON, a free app/site graciously provided by Masiff (folks behind Lancer) that will walk you through every step of the pilot creation process with ease. The pilot level should be LL0. Once created, you'll generate a share code so I can upload the character to Foundry and get them in the game!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Players should make an effort to read the FREE player-facing rules available on Massif's itch.io page (Lancer Core Book: First Edition PDF FREE) Players should make an LL0 Pilot & Mech on compcon.app Upon finishing pilot creation, players should generate a share code and send it to me either here or on Discord (levilagoon) After that, I'll share the Foundry URL and you'll simply past it into your browser and join the game when it's time!

What Levi brings to the table

I *do* character voices, but since it's a tutorial, that kind of thing will be limited, since I want to be able to quickly and easily communicate rules and things without having to worry about accents or anything getting in the way. I utilize plenty of ambient music and soundscapes in my games; when you're controlling your mech, you'll hear the firefight on the ground. When you've got your satellite imagery map open, you'll hear faint radio chatter over comms, and I make every effort to make sure tokens and scenes are carefully put together to as high a quality as I can muster, often drawing my own NPCs for use in game. I absolutely encourage rule of cool where able, though this being a tutorial game, it'll help to play it close to the book as we can so we know what the rules really are in most cases! After all, to bend or break the rules, we have to know what they are in the first place!

Homebrew rules

I am not a stickler about climbing/mantling rules honestly. I just kind of let folks jump up to their mech size, and then any further climbing is done at half-speed. Other homebrew rules include Maria's Alternate Rules For Structure & Stress (basically means you as a player get stunned less as a result of losing health, making the death spiral less punishing) and Kai's NPC Rebake (a tweaking/adjustment of NPCs to have less obtuse multiattacks as leveled play goes on, making fights more of a tactical puzzle/challenge and less of a game of rocket tag. This doesn't have a huge impact on low-level play)

Safety

How Levi creates a safe table

I will have the X-Card module available on Foundry, so the moment something is brought up that you don't feel comfortable with, simply press the button if you don't feel comfortable addressing it out loud, and we will find another way around the scene or change topics entirely. Let it be known this is just a tutorial mission, and as such, I do not anticipate any taboo/difficult topics to come up naturally as a result of any narrative going-ons that I have planned. That being said, there is absolutely no harm to utilizing the Open-door policy and simply dipping if, for any reason at all, you feel the game isn't for you, the group isn't to your liking, or anything like that. You are more than welcome to leave at any time, no questions asked.
