About the adventure

"The future of Thylea looks grim. Monsters menace the roads, and corruption threatens the cities. The storm god Sydon demands daily sacrifices at every temple, and his sister-wife Lutheria kidnaps children for her secret rituals. The Five Gods, who once protected the settlers, are silent. And now, the Oracle has prophesied the Doom of Thylea: the death of gods, the destruction of Mytros, and the total annihilation of the mortal races. You are one of a group of warriors who have been summoned to the Heartlands in an attempt to avert this coming catastrophe. You each have reasons for answering the call, but rumors of your coming have already spread across the land." Set in the ancient land of Thylea, Odyssey of the Dragonlords is a D&D campaign where heroes rise to face gods, Titans, and destiny itself. Inspired by Greek myths, it mixes classic fantasy adventure with the tone of an ancient epic, where oaths have power, pride can destroy, and every choice has consequences. You begin as mortals chosen by prophecy, called to stop the end of the world. You’ll travel across seas filled with monsters, explore forgotten islands, and uncover the truth behind the fallen Dragonlords. Along the way, you’ll make allies, challenge gods, and decide what kind of heroes you want to be. The game features unique Thylean races such as centaurs, minotaurs, medusae, satyrs, sirens, and nymphs, along with unique subclasses. Each character also follows an Epic Path—a personal destiny that grants story-driven powers and ties them directly to Thylea’s prophecy. The campaign focuses on story, character growth, and moral choices. There will be combat, but also opportunities to lead, negotiate, and shape the fate of entire kingdoms. Your actions will change how the people and gods of Thylea see you. This game is for players who love heroic sagas, Greek myth, and moral complexity, for those who want to see their characters grow from humble beginnings into figures of legend. Your story will be written in the stars, but how it ends will be entirely up to you.

About me

I'm a freelance journalist and a longtime, moderately experienced D&D player, now dipping my toes into the PbP DMing pool. I've enjoyed freeform roleplay in chatrooms and forums for years—stretching back to the early days of the internet—and I've always had a fondness for fantasy settings. Plotting, narrative, and note-taking are my forte, but I enjoy crunching numbers too—even if I'm terrible at math.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation will happen before the game begins, using the Odyssey of the Dragonlords Player’s Guide and the 2024 D&D 5e Player’s Handbook as primary sources. Players will start at Level 1. All characters will be created directly in the Discord server in the designated channel. Roll three sets, then choose one to keep. Write a short backstory tied to your Epic Path. Each character will have a different Epic Path, and selection is first come, first served. Once your character background and sheet are submitted and approved, import your character to Avrae using !import. Since D&D Beyond lacks third party support out of homebrew options, you may need to use a fillable character sheet pdf instead.

The current party

Current party is: - Nymph druid with the doomed one epic path - Human monk with the vanished one epic path - Medusa wizard with the cursed one epic path - Minotaur paladin/warlock with the dragon slayer epic path

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Before the game begins, players should complete the following steps: - Join the campaign Discord server. This is where all play, rolls, and communication will happen. - Create a D&D Beyond account if you don't already have one. - Read the Odyssey of the Dragonlords Player’s Guide. It contains key lore, Epic Paths, and Thylea-specific rules. - Roll your stats in the designated Discord channel using the !threshold command (three sets, choose one). - Build your character using the 2024 D&D 5e Player’s Handbook and Odyssey Player’s Guide. - Write a short backstory that ties your Epic Path to the Oracle’s prophecy. - Submit your sheet and backstory for GM approval. - Review the pinned rules and posting guidelines in Discord before play begins.

What Jennifer brings to the table

This will be a play-by-post campaign on Discord using Avrae for rolls and combat automation and On The Fly Battle Maps (otfbm) for visual encounters. Everything happens directly in the server—no extra logins or VTTs required. My GM style focuses on story-driven, character-centered play. You can expect concise narration, meaningful choices, and consequences that shape both your character and the world of Thylea. Players are encouraged to post at least three times per week to keep the story moving at a steady pace. Combat is tactical but streamlined through Avrae, with otfbm maps used for positioning and clarity. I follow Rules as Written for consistency and fairness, but I allow Rule of Cool moments when they enhance the story or fit the mythic tone of the campaign. Posts should be written in multiple concise paragraphs that blend character action, dialogue, and inner thought. Expect a balance of roleplay, exploration, and combat. If you value collaborative storytelling, consistent engagement, and mythic adventure, this game is designed for you.

Homebrew rules

• Flanking Flanking grants a +2 bonus to attack rolls—but only if the attacker does not already have advantage. • Health Potions • Bonus Action – Drink for standard healing. • Action – Drink for maximum healing. • Applies to NPCs and enemies as well. • Spectacular Crits/Fails Rolling double 20s on advantage or double 1s on disadvantage triggers a roll on the Spectacular Crits/Fails Table. (Note: Still tweaking it) • Ammo & Components Simplified Basic ammunition (arrows, bolts, etc.) and non-costly spell components (no listed gold value) are tracked loosely. You only need to resupply when it makes narrative sense or after extended use. • Spectacular Critical Hits/Fumbles This table adds cinematic extremes to combat outcomes when players roll double natural 20s or double natural 1s under advantage or disadvantage, respectively. • Spellcasting Qualification A character only qualifies as a spellcaster if they possess the Spellcasting class feature. Innate spell use, racial traits, feats, or magic items alone do not qualify a character as a spellcaster unless they explicitly grant the Spellcasting feature.

How Jennifer creates a safe table

This game uses Lines and Veils and an Open Door policy to maintain a respectful, enjoyable environment for everyone. Before play begins, all players will receive a link to a Lines and Veils document to set individual boundaries around sensitive topics. Players can update their boundaries anytime during the campaign. The Open Door policy allows anyone to step away from a scene or the campaign if needed. A dedicated #hiatus channel exists for players to communicate if they need a break, whether short-term or indefinite.
