About me

šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦ I'm Canadian šŸ 🄰 I love it when a group comes together to interactively create a fantastical, fun, memorable story. šŸ’„ I've just wrapped my 3rd full 5e campaign and cherish that bittersweet moment after the epilogue where you sign off for the last time. šŸ—ŗļø Setting the stage is my role and I dive in with gusto (and humour). You work with the other players to drive the story forward. However the story turns out, we'll have created it together, always having each others' backs. I'll also weave your backstory into the plot so your character has some time in a spotlight. Oh, and if we aren't laughing our butts off periodically, we are definitely doing something "wrong". šŸ˜† ā³ I have players who joined me early in the pandemic and are still gaming with me now. I started playing D&D very early on, DMed for over a decade, and then took a hiatus. I started 5e in April of 2020 after watching/donating to a charity D&D game with Felicia Day and The Guild cast being DMed by Amy Vorpahl (@vorpahlsword). šŸ‘‰šŸ‘ˆ Yes, I've been signed up to Start Playing for a while an am only now getting started with it. šŸ˜… šŸŽžļø Oh, and I use 19th century cameras & techniques to photograph folks in cosplay/costumes. My banner is a photo from a 'zombie walk' in Toronto, Canada.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created using the 2024 rules, and we'll start Level 1. You can use any species or subclasses from the officially published books, either 2014 (Monsters of the Multiverse for species) or 2024. Players will share their character ideas on Discord, but try to be open to some changes as we talk through what roles each character wants to lean into and the skills/spells they will take. During Session 0, we'll work through how characters know one another and firm up skills, spells, and other details.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Please have an account on Discord and D&D Beyond. I'll share a D&D Beyond Campaign with you that has over a dozen source books you can pull character creation content from (including 2024 rules). You don't need to create an account for Owlbear Rodeo, but it does make things a little easier for you when joining each session. You do NOT have to pay for Owlbear Rodeo at all; I pay and do all the setup of the app.

What Don brings to the table

Session 0 is free. I try to do voices. You might laugh at them. Combat can get intense and tactical. Rule of Cool wins most times, especially if it brings drama or laughs. I change published modules quite a bit. You would likely enjoy this story even if you have a bit of knowledge about the published module. I use lots of art, custom (beautiful) maps, and custom tokens in Owlbear. Don't worry if you've not used D&D Beyond and/or Owlbear Rodeo before. I'm happy to jump on Discord, share my screen and help you out.

Homebrew rules

If you describe your character doing something cinematic, you can earn advantage. 2024 backgrounds are all custom where you select any feat and ability score adjustments that suits your character. Trying to long rest in a haunted bog won't be as helpful as resting in an inn. Bloodied creatures will sometimes fight back harder with a tweak or two. Critical hits are max dice rolls plus a single set of dice rolls (rather than dice rolls twice) You cannot force creatures/characters to reroll nat 1s or nat 20s Ranger's Hunter's Mark has fewer limitations. Ranged weapon users get +2 to hit for any creatures 10ft or more lower than them.

Safety

How Don creates a safe table

Rules for the games will be shared in the Discord. Lines and Veils will be respected by all players. If a player does not feel comfortable publicly sharing, they can message me privately and I will ensure that all boundaries are respected and followed. If a player refuses to follow rules after warnings, they will be asked to leave. Session Zero will go over these rules again, along with any content warnings.
