About the adventure

Welcome to Baldur’s Gate, the beating heart of the Sword Coast, where ambition outpaces morality and coin outweighs conscience. The city’s marble towers and gutter alleys are alive with opportunity, corruption, and peril. One night you might guard a noble’s secret vote in the Upper City; the next, you’re knee-deep in the sewers hunting cultists of the Dead Three.

About me

My name is James, an American Expat living in the Middle East. I am a straightforward DM who runs story-driven DnD with plenty of room for chaos. I like when players take big swings and shape the world, and I work hard to make your ideas matter. I welcome new players and still challenge veterans. Players have called my games engaging, funny, innovative, and worth coming back to. If you want a DM who rewards creativity, keeps the energy up, and happily lets the party wreck his carefully laid plans, you are in the right place.

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters will be created before the session using D&D 5e (2024 rules) on D&D Beyond or Roll20. Stats will be rolled with group (4d6, drop the lowest). Starting level is 9. Level: Tier 2 typically start at Level 7–9, depending on the adventure. Starting Gear: Choose standard class and background equipment or purchase gear using starting gold. Allowed Sources: Player’s Handbook (2024) Dungeon Master’s Guide (2024) Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything Xanathar’s Guide to Everything Custom backgrounds and reskinning are allowed if story-consistent. Restrictions: No Unearthed Arcana, homebrew classes, or third-party sources without prior approval. Tone & Setting: Morally gray and politically corrupt, heroes here make compromises to survive. Characters should have motives, flaws, and may even have reasons to get their hands dirty. If you need help finalizing your build or tying your backstory into the city, I’ll assist before the game to make sure you fit seamlessly into the world.

The current party

We've got three players that have been together for six months now. They are an awesome crew.

What The Storyteller brings to the table

I provide a grounded, story-first experience for mature players 18 and older. Roleplay drives everything, and the rules serve as a framework to keep the story consistent and fair. Combat is tactical but always tied to narrative purpose, and character choices shape how events unfold. These games are not hero fantasies. They can be dark, violent, and morally gray, with mature themes such as body horror, torture, substance use, and corruption. Some sessions may feel light or hopeful, others heavy and unsettling. I never aim to shock, but I do not step in the way of good storytelling. If you want a game where actions matter and the story feels real, we will build it together.

Homebrew rules

House Rules: -Healing potions: Drink, bonus action | roll. Drink, full action | max. Using on downed ally | full action + roll. -No flanking -Drop to 0 hp | gain exhaustion -Familiars take turn immediately after you -Monsters are not dumb (depending on intelligence) -Spirit Guardians, similar spells do not work as lawnmower

Safety

How The Storyteller creates a safe table

I keep things simple and respectful. Players can speak up at any time if something makes them uncomfortable, and we will adjust. Everyone at the table is expected to act like an adult and treat others with respect.
