About the adventure

Have you always wanted to try D&D but didn't know where to start? Or maybe you played a few sessions and enjoyed it but never had the opportunity to develop your skills. Then this is the game for you! ALL are welcome (18+). There is no gatekeeping here. And as this is a beginner campaign, I am offering an introductory price of $5.00 per player, per session! The Keep on the Borderlands is a classic D&D adventure released in 1979. For many young players in the early 80s, the dangerous Borderlands provided their first exciting foray into the worlds of Dungeons & Dragons. The new D&D Starter Set is closely based on the original adventure, updated for modern tastes and sensibilities. You will journey through a dangerous wilderness to find the Keep, the last bastion that defends civilization from the evils encroaching from the wilds beyond the Borderlands. It is your goal to aid the defenders of the Keep against the forces of Evil and Chaos, keeping them from overrunning the civilized Realm. You will discover rumor of a mysterious Chaos Cult operating in the area, drawing together all manners of evil beings to do their bidding. From the terrifying Caves of Chaos, this cult plans to bring their evil schemes to fruition... which may spell the end of all good within the Realm!

About me

I've been running D&D games since the 1980's and have experience with almost every edition. I enjoy playing and running games with a strong balance between social interaction, exploration (including dungeon crawling, puzzle solving, questing, and treasure-seeking!), and combat. I want to run games because it's what I love to do! I want to bring the joy of my favorite game, D&D, to both new and experienced players of all ages. Everyone 18+ is welcome at my table (virtual or otherwise) as long as they abide by these simple rules: 1) Players must have the desire and ability to cooperate with the DM and other players to tell a great story and have tremendous amounts of fun... no being a jerk because "It's what my character would do."; 2) No bigotry, sexism, racism, homophobia, or transphobia; 3) A bit of adult conversation is fine, but be considerate of other people's feelings and limits. If you can do the above, I want to pay D&D with you!

Character creation

Creating your character

I have several premade characters, and I will assign one to each player. This is the easiest way to get players with little or no experience playing as quickly as possible. Alternately, you may use a 1st level character that you have prepared ahead of time in D&D Beyond. If you make your own character, stick to character species, backgrounds, classes, and subclasses available in the free D&D Beyond Basic rules or the Fifth Edition Player's Handbook (2024 version). For this adventure, it is best to stick to the “classic” species and classes: Human, Elf, Dwarf, and Halfling for species; and Fighter, Wizard, Cleric, and Rogue for classes. You must use point-buy or standard array (no rolling for ability scores).

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You'll need an account at D&D Beyond. A free account is fine. Also, we will be using Discord for voice chat, and preferably video as well (if you are comfortable being on camera).

What Jason B brings to the table

I'll have everything for the adventure set up on the D&D Beyond Maps VTT (virtual table top) with encounters prepared and ready to go. We will be linking your D&D beyond character sheet to the campaign so you can do all your rolls within the VTT. I have acting experience, so when I'm playing NPCs I will be speaking in character, and the NPCs will have distinct personalities. However, accents are not my forte so the funny voices will be kept to a minimum!

Homebrew rules

We will be using the 5e ruleset; however, in my Dungeon Mastering style, sometimes common sense and a "rulings over rules" philosophy will cause cause me to bend or deviate from the rules as written. This is to improve game flow, simplify unnecessarily complex or ambiguous rules, make the game as fun and fair as possible.

Safety

How Jason B creates a safe table

Part of the first session, up to an hour, will be used as "Session Zero." Feel free to discuss what you want to see in the game, what you don't, and what your hard limits are. Keep in mind that this is D&D, which involves intense fantasy combat sequences. There will be violence, blood, and death. Villains will act like villains and do some abhorrent things. There are morally gray characters. Truly terrible things may be alluded to but will be kept offscreen. At any time you feel uncomfortable, feel free to step away, take a break, and/or have an open discussion with the DM or the group. There will be no judgements, and accommodations will be made, within reason.
