About the adventure

You begin in Tyr, beneath the shadow of King Kalak, where blood and spectacle keep the crowds entertained—and the powerful in control. Maybe you're a gladiator fighting for survival. A slave dreaming of freedom. A criminal, mercenary, psychic, templar, merchant, or fool chasing glory. Whatever brought you here, the arena is only the beginning. Athas is dying. Its gods are silent, its wilderness is merciless, and its cities are ruled by immortal Sorcerer-Kings. Water is precious. Metal is rare. Magic can drain the life from the earth. Freedom may be the most dangerous thing of all. Fight brutal battles where tactics matter and victory must be earned. Build friendships, rivalries, romances, and alliances. Navigate conspiracies and decide whom you trust, what you're willing to sacrifice—and what freedom actually means when you finally have the chance to seize it. This is a mature sword-and-sorcery campaign blending tactical combat, survival, political intrigue, relationships, and dark humor. The world is brutal, but the story isn't predetermined. The choices that saved you yesterday may create tomorrow's war. And Athas will remember what you do.

About me

Your choices should matter. The world should remember them. I'm Omar, The Cartesian Roach—a professional Game Master and TV screenwriter specializing in cinematic, challenging campaigns where players have the freedom to change the story. I've run 900+ professional sessions on StartPlaying, earning a 5-star rating across 50 reviews. My players consistently highlight my storytelling, creativity, challenging encounters, and visual production. I build living worlds rather than predetermined stories. Characters remember you. Enemies learn from you. Political decisions reshape cities. Failure creates new problems. In some campaigns, several groups even share the same world, allowing one party's actions to become another's history. I've loved D&D since I was nine. Decades later, what fascinates me isn't telling players my story. It's discovering what happens when I give them a world and let them make it theirs.

Character creation

Creating your character

New to D&D or Dark Sun? We'll build your character together. Experienced players are welcome to arrive with a concept using these guidelines: * D&D 2024 rules * Starting Level: 3 (Unless you are joining an ongoing game) * Ability Scores: Roll 4d4+4 for each stat, creating two full sets; choose your preferred set. * Equipment: Standard starting equipment. Metal is rare on Athas—survival comes from wit and will, not steel. * Dark Sun Options: Unearthed Arcana Dark Sun campaign subclasses are allowed. * Magic: Spellcasting is absolutely welcome, but arcane magic has consequences. On Athas, how you use magic can be as important as what you cast. Don't worry about knowing Dark Sun lore before joining. Your character can discover Athas as you do. Bring me a character you want to care about. I'll give them a world worth surviving.

The current party

ABOUT YOUR PARTY This is a cooperative, character-driven party. You don't need to build the perfect team—or even agree with each other—but everyone should be willing to give other characters room to matter. Expect a mix of tactical players, roleplayers, explorers, schemers, and character optimizers. Creative builds and powerful characters are welcome; so are imperfect characters built around a great story. Characters may argue, compete, fall in love, keep secrets, pursue conflicting goals, or question each other's choices. Players collaborate. Characters don't always have to. Newcomers to Dark Sun—and even to D&D—are welcome. You don't need to know Athas before you arrive. Bring a character with something to fight for. The party will discover what they're willing to fight for together.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

BEFORE YOUR FIRST SESSION Getting ready is easy. You don't need to purchase any additional software to play. Required * A working webcam and microphone. * A free Zoom account. Optional * TaleSpire: If you own it, you can explore our 3D battlefields directly. If not, no problem—I share everything through Zoom. * D&D Beyond + Beyond20: You're welcome to use them for your character sheet and rolls, but they're not required. YOUR MINIATURE We'll create your character's custom 3D miniature together. You don't need to buy a Hero Forge model or arrive with one already made—I'll take care of bringing your character into our virtual world. MOST IMPORTANTLY Come with a stable internet connection, a character you're excited to play, and curiosity about Athas. I'll take care of the rest.

What Omar, the Cartesian Roach brings to the table

⚔️ YOUR CHARACTER, MADE TANGIBLE Every player receives a custom-designed 3D miniature built around their character's appearance and personality. Your character shouldn't feel like a token—they should look like they belong in Athas. 🏜️ BATTLES WORTH REMEMBERING Major encounters unfold across immersive 3D environments, with terrain and locations chosen or built for the campaign. Expect tactical battles where positioning matters, enemies fight intelligently, and your abilities are meant to be used. 🔥 A WORLD WITH ATMOSPHERE Artwork, music, maps, visual references, and carefully prepared encounters give every city, faction, journey, and battlefield its own identity. Foundry VTT and TaleSpire support the experience—the technology never replaces the storytelling. 🌑 THE LIVING ATHAS Your campaign doesn't exist in isolation. Several adventuring parties inhabit the same Athas at the same time. Wars, alliances, assassinations, discoveries, and disasters caused by one group can reshape the world encountered by another. What happens at another table this week may become your problem next week. You're not following a predetermined story. You're making history.

Homebrew rules

My house rules are designed to make combat fast, tactical, and brutal while giving players room to use everything their characters can do. - Lethality Rules: We use Brennan Lee Mulligan-inspired lethality rules that make both heroes and enemies more dangerous. You can end fights faster, hit harder, and turn a good tactical move into a devastating victory—but your enemies play by the same rules. What you can do to them, they can do to you. - Potions: Drinking a potion yourself takes a Bonus Action. - Spellcasting: There is no one-spell-slot-per-turn restriction. If your action economy allows it, use it. - Long Rests: Player characters benefit from a Long Rest at the end of each session, so you can take risks and use your abilities instead of constantly saving them for later. - Defiling Magic: Defiling is always an option. Arcane casters can draw power from the life around them—but power has consequences on Athas. These rules aren't here to fight your character sheet. They're here to let you use it—and make the world dangerous enough to answer back.

Safety

How Omar, the Cartesian Roach creates a safe table

DARK FICTION. SAFE TABLE. Dark Sun is a mature campaign for adults. Athas can be violent, cruel, sensual, and morally uncomfortable. Stories may explore oppression, slavery, discrimination, body horror, sexuality, abusive power, and other difficult themes. The characters aren't always safe. The players should be. Before we begin, we'll establish boundaries together. Romance and sexuality are welcome when players want them, never imposed when they don't. Lines & Veils, Session 0, breaks, and an open-door policy help us explore difficult fiction without sacrificing anyone's comfort. Characters will hate, betray, manipulate, desire, fight, and disagree. You will be having fun. Players treat each other with respect. The goal is to create enough trust around the table that we can explore what makes Dark Sun the dangerous world it is.
