About the adventure

In a world of airships, trains, six-shooters and cyborgs, magic has fallen to the wayside in favor of burgeoning iron industry. Seemingly in defiance of this technological golden age, mystical spirits and creatures only referred to in myth begin to manifest, often asynchronously with the grizzled desert populace of the region. Evocative of the Eberron setting and sporting the unique features from Loot Tavern's Ryoko's Guide to the Yokai Realms, players will explore a world of opposites attempting to mix. This game is perfect for players wanting to get stuck into a unique setting. Roleplay and combat will be balanced with enjoyability in mind and difficulty will be scaled to fit the story to ensure encounters can be challenging with of course leaving room for the occasional power-fantasy-inducing stomp. Wacky voices, detailed backstories and immersive mindsets are encouraged but will not be forced on players just looking for some classic d&d shenanigans. For those looking for an immersive experience, you can expect detailed worldbuilding, elaborate narratives, engaging player arcs and a variety of maps and tools to bring the experience to life! About me

Hey all, as a writer and hobbyist I love filling my time with the making and playing of TTRPGs. Those who wish to journey through my games alongside me can expect ample player focused worldbuilding, engaging narratives and an emphasis on having the best time possible. Whether you're a strength based wizard pushing rule zero to it's limit or a number crunching power builder, I pride myself on ensuring everybody has a place in the story and will do my best to ensure everyone is getting what they want out of any adventure!

Character creation

Creating your character

A Session 0 will be held but the general formula is as follows; 5e characters, starting at level 3 and using most of the official content. Point buy is preferred but the option to roll stats is available during the Session 0. For 'non-traditional' species and class choices (like locathah, warforged & plasmoids) an initial check in with me or a discussion during session zero should take place to ensure everybody is on the same page. In the same vein, class and species options from Ryoko's Guide might be considered and discussed during or before Session 0 also.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

Discord, Roll20 are required for play, alongside a microphone. A discord server is used by myself to keep track of various games and host the voice calls for sessions. D&DBeyond and Beyond 20 plugin are convenient for those with access to each but they are not essential if you have an alternate means of storing your character sheet.

What Sam brings to the table

As a DM, I will use voices, music and high quality maps to ensure an experience is immersive. Players can expect a balance of roleplay, puzzles and combat to appear in the game with an emphasis on deliberate encounters and a difficulty system that gives players a chance to feel challenged but also feel powerful. The Rules as Written guide the play but bending the rules might occur to ensure the rules never become a barrier to enjoyable play.

Homebrew rules

Bonus actions potions and reactionary Inspiration are two examples of common homebrew rules that I prefer in my campaigns. Any extra ones will be communicated during character creation as they become apparent, an example being "Heroic Last Stands" that could give players a chance to do one final dramatic turn should their characters fail their final death save.

Safety

How Sam creates a safe table

In addition to a general code of conduct on the discord, I'll reach out to players with an more detailed document of do's and don'ts that we be further elaborated on in session 1/0. We will discus the aspects of play that are off limits, themes and subject matters that will be avoided initially but have the potential to be introduced going forward and any additional steps the players can take to communicate their own needs. This document will also include means of slowing or pausing sessions to return to a zone of comfort, should any barriers arise. These will then be resolved privately or communally as dependent on the player/s and situation. Safety is key and if players have additional ways to feel protected, a discussion to onboard these ideas will take place during the initial communications and opening sessions. An example includes an anonymous Deck of Player safety at session 0, which will occur online and reappear occasionally in the campaign to suit the players needs.
