About the adventure
The war is over. The empire has fallen. And now… the true battle begins. In Ashes of the First Flame, you play as high-level veterans of a revolution that changed the world. Five years ago, you helped bring down the Crimson Empire—a regime defined by brutality, greed, and oppression. In its place rose the Phoenix Accord, a new government built on promises of peace and unity. But those promises are cracking. Whispers of vanished dissidents, secret prisons, and creeping authoritarianism have begun to surface—and you’ve just been called back into service. Whether you're honored heroes or haunted survivors, you're about to face the uncomfortable truth: the regime you helped create may be no better than the one you destroyed. This is a roleplay-forward, narrative-rich campaign focused on themes of war, betrayal, and rising tyranny. It’s a story about the cost of power, the weight of legacy, and the choices people make when there are no good options left. You’ll navigate tense political landscapes, uncover buried secrets, and face enemies old and new—both on the battlefield and in the halls of power. The world is not black and white. Neither are you. We’ll be playing from levels 12 to 20, with epic power scaling, cinematic combat, and complex moral decisions. Expect intense NPC relationships, personal story arcs, and consequences that reshape the world. This is a campaign for players who love deep character drama, morally gray choices, found family, and a story that doesn’t pull its punches. If you’re ready to see what comes after the revolution—and what it takes to keep a better world from slipping into the same darkness—then welcome to Ashes of the First Flame.

Creating your character
Characters will be created before Session 1 using D&D Beyond or a shared digital character sheet. I’ll schedule a brief 1-on-1 session or check-in with each player to help build your character, answer questions, and tie you into the story—because your past matters in this campaign. We’ll be starting at Level 12, with progression planned through Level 20. Stats will be generated using point buy or standard array to ensure balance at high level. All officially published Wizards of the Coast content is allowed, including Tasha’s, Xanathar’s, and One D&D playtest material (upon request). Homebrew and third-party content (like Grim Hollow or Kibbles’ subclasses) may be approved on a case-by-case basis—just ask first! This is a narrative-driven campaign, so I love working with players to weave your backstories directly into the world. You’ll start as former war heroes, ex-rebels, or survivors of the old regime—people who fought for something and must now question what they’ve built.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Microphone: A working mic is required so we can all hear each other clearly. You don’t need a webcam (though I’ll be using mine!), so feel free to stay off camera if that’s more comfortable for you. Owlbear Rodeo Account: We’ll use Owlbear Rodeo for maps and tokens. You’ll need to create a free account ahead of time. It’s quick and easy, and I’ll provide the link when the session begins. Rules Knowledge: You don’t need to be a rules expert! If you’re familiar with the basics of 5e and comfortable playing a higher-level character, you’ll be right at home. I’m always happy to help with questions as we go.
What Skyybunny brings to the table
I run story-driven games with a strong focus on atmosphere, dramatic choices, and cinematic moments. I love giving players room to shine—whether that’s with epic combat moves, gut-wrenching emotional scenes, or solving the mystery in a totally unexpected way. I’m all about collaborative storytelling, and I prioritize fun and narrative over strict rules-lawyering. If a moment is cool, dramatic, and makes sense for your character? I’ll usually let it fly, even if the rules don’t cover it exactly. (Don’t worry—I’ll still keep things balanced and challenging!) While I don’t do a lot of character voices, I lean into strong roleplay, detailed descriptions, and rich, atmospheric settings to bring the world to life. I do use ambient background music and sound effects during play to enhance the mood, especially in haunted or high-stakes scenes. I aim for tense, tactical combat where your choices matter—but I’ll always make space for big moments, creative spells, and clever plays. I love it when players surprise me, and I build my sessions to reward creativity, resourcefulness, and character-driven decisions.
Homebrew rules
To keep the game fast, cinematic, and satisfying, I use a few light homebrew rules at my table. These are designed to reward smart choices and make combat feel a bit more heroic (and brutal): Potions as Bonus Actions: Drinking a potion yourself is a bonus action. Feeding a potion to another creature still takes a full action. Max Healing Option: If you spend your action to drink a potion (instead of using it as a bonus action), you receive maximum healing instead of rolling. Critical Hit Damage: When you land a critical hit, you deal maximum damage for one die (e.g., a d8 becomes 8) plus rolled damage for the rest of the attack. This makes crits feel truly devastating and rewarding. These rules are simple, fast to remember, and help keep things moving while giving players a little extra heroic edge. If you have any questions, I’ll go over them again at the start of the session!

Safety
How Skyybunny creates a safe table
Player safety is a top priority, and we’ll establish clear boundaries before the game begins. During Session 0, we will review a comprehensive Lines and Veils document, which I will send out ahead of time for players to fill out and reference during gameplay. This document will cover sensitive topics, including what’s off-limits (Lines) and what can be included in a more controlled way (Veils), as well as what’s fully acceptable (On). We’ll also discuss any additional content concerns and make sure that everyone feels comfortable with the game’s themes. After Session 0, we’ll review these boundaries at the start of the campaign and ensure everyone is on the same page. Throughout the game, we’ll use a combination of physical (X, N, O) indicators and digital signals, like the “X card” (or an equivalent), to quickly halt content that makes players uncomfortable, and we’ll do a check-in after each session to ensure everyone’s okay. This could be a simple message or a more in-depth conversation depending on player needs. Aftercare is key. If anything intense or difficult happens during the game, I’ll provide a safe space for players to debrief, either in-person after the session or digitally in a private message. I’m always available for private conversations to ensure everyone’s emotional and mental well-being is taken into account, and I’ll offer additional support if needed. The goal is to keep the game fun, engaging, and, most importantly, safe for everyone involved.
