About the adventure

A professional burglar ring has infiltrated your town, but they don't operate like you'd think. They get in and out effortlessly, but they leave behind obvious valuables and take instead things that are of the most intense personal value to their owners. Some of those owners have, in subsequent weeks, gone mad or disappeared. The police have been utterly ineffectual. They have stolen from you, and you aren't the kind to sit around and wait for madness and death. So you and few of our fellow townspeople are taking things into your own hands. You don't always get along, but you all agree there's more going on here than meets the eye. The clock is ticking and stakes are higher than you can even conceive. Can you solve the mysteries of Weaver's Key before your time runs out?

About me

I've been a Dungeon Master in various capacities for more than 40 years, though I've drifted away from more mechanic-heavy systems to those that tend to be more rules-light with focus on character interactions, improvisation and role play. I like almost all of the Powered by the Apocalypse systems and annually GM Monster of the Week sessions at GenCon. I love presenting characters with difficult choices and rewarding failure with experience. If you like collaborating with the Game Master to make real decisions that really affect the world, including the Player Characters around you, there's a good chance you'll like the way I game.

Kip ran a one-shot Monster of the Week scenario for us. One of the best one-shots that I've played in. Great beats. Kept us on track without railroading. Can't recommend him enough!

Kip is an excellent game master. Great story teller but also presents interesting gameplay and unique challenges. He does the work and thinks it through. Highly recommend!

Character creation
Creating your character

We will create characters collaboratively as part of the first session. In Powered by Apocalypse games, establishing the characters and your relationships is a massive part of the fun and starts creating story hooks and motivations that will feed the improvisations to come!

What to expect
Preparing for the session

We will play over Zoom, so access to Zoom, a webcam and microphone are essential. The rules are simple to teach, but you can choose to familiarize yourself with the basics ahead of time. Any program that allows you to share screen to show your dice rolls works. Here's a very easy and basic one: https://www.calculator.net/dice-roller.html I also strongly recommend that you use the fillable character sheets available here so that you can share them with me easily: https://evilhat.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/Monster-of-the-Week-Revised-Playbooks-Formfillable.pdf

What Kip brings to the table

I may occasionally have a visual to share, but nothing intense. Monster of the Week or rules light and I am closer to the Rule of Cool compares to the Rules as Written. Emphasis is on improvisation and exploring character relationships as they battle supernatural horrors. Combat is more cinematic and emotionally intense than it is tactical. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Characters are moderately "safe" but they can die, especially if there's a strong narrative reason for it.

Homebrew rules

I may introduce new concepts such as "corruption" or "guilt" or "anger" as thematically suits the situation. I frequently do this kind of thing, but these are light and supplemental additions to the basic game play and should not present a giant leap of faith or add overburdensome complexity but should rather assist role playing and your decision making.
