About the adventure

A word of warning before you join this game: this story will not be a pleasant one. This is not a game where you are a hero, venturing to exotic locales and defeating evil monsters to earn gold and glory. If that's what you're looking for, there's a D&D 5e game posted right beside this one that'll be much more to your liking. If you join this game, you will find a story of peculiar orphans, mysterious monsters, eccentric townsfolk, and the hidden truths that bind them all together in the isolated countryside of Candlewick Vale. You will uncover secrets people would rather keep hidden, including your own dark past that you've mercifully forgotten up until now. You have been warned... 🧟 Play as a creepy orphan born with unnatural abilities! 🗝️ Explore Candlewick Vale - a region full of strange people and their stranger secrets! 🔎 No backstories - discover your sordid past through your misadventures! 🎲 One Roll Engine keeps the gameplay fast and exciting! 💀 Inspired by Twin Peaks, A Series of Unfortunate Events, and The Addams Family!

About me

Greetings everybody! Call me Nathan (he/him)! I am a storyteller at heart who loves all forms of fiction. I run games ranging from pulpy sci-fi to gritty fantasy and everything in between. I especially love weird or non-standard settings. Superheroes in a cyberpunk city? Time-traveling fantasy adventure? Teenagers on a supernatural road trip? I'm all here for it. I believe that tabletop RPGs are a unique storytelling experience where everyone at the table becomes both author and audience to the shared story. Facilitating this shared storytelling experience is my primary goal as a GM. My games do not make use of generative AI for writing, music, or images. Storytelling is a fundamentally human experience, and synthesized plagiarism has no place in my games. I look forward to sharing stories with you! Profile picture created by Neo! Character creation

Creating your character

We will be creating characters during session zero. Your character will not have a backstory at the start of the game, so instead focus on how they are in the present moment. Come to session zero with lots of ideas!

The current party

🌙 Lunara Cordelia Philpot: A pale girl with a round face that glows like the moon. Acts older than she is. 🐍 Seraphina Basilisk: A quiet girl with the sharp fangs and hypnotic gaze of a serpent. 👁️ Iris Seymour: A curious girl who's always searching for oddities with her detachable eyes.

Safety

How Nathan Patrick Lane creates a safe table

Before session zero, I'll be private messaging all the players one-on-one to discuss Lines, Veils, and Wishes. Our first session will be a free session zero, wherein we will make introductions, review Lines & Veils, and create characters. We also use a variant of X Card system called Editing Tools. Editing Tools allow players to Pause the game temporarily, Fast Forward through unpleasant content, or Rewind and rewrite the scene to avoid triggering content. At the end of every session, I will run through "Roses, Thorns, and Buds", allowing players to present positive and negative feedback about the game along with suggestions to make the game more enjoyable in the future. Bigotry will not be tolerated in this group. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, or other prejudiced behaviors will warrant an immediate kick.
