About the adventure

A group of low level monsters, including yourself, have escaped the oppressive rule of the dreaded black dragon Coalheart. Full of hope and ideas, you have built a new home in an empty dungeon where monsters can thrive together and be their truest selves. Broken Chains: Minions No More is a flexible, rules-light, low-stakes, community-building sandbox game. Away from the schemes of evil overlords, who will you be and what kinds of adventures do you want to have? Delve into your new home, help your fellow monsters, protect your dungeon from greedy marauders, embark on your own quests, find new friends, the world is your to explore however you wish! This campaign will be long-running, with an evolving dungeon environment based on player choices. Each week will have its own small adventures with no prior experience needed, meaning new players can join at any week! Break your chains and join us!

About me

Hello and welcome! I’m Dex (artist, SF&F author, and GM) and I'd love for you to join one of my games! I am passionate about storytelling and providing a fun experience for my players. I got started in 2019 when I decided I wanted to learn to play D&D, couldn't find an open game among friends, and decided to create a massive homebrew campaign following the plot of a novel I wrote. Ridiculous? Perhaps, but it was certainly an interesting way to learn, and I have been running games ever since! As a writer and creative person in general, homebrews are near and dear to my heart. If you book me to run a game or whole campaign for you, we can discuss ways that I can tailor the plot, characters, magic, and baddies to suit your needs.

Character creation

Creating your character

Character creation for this modified version of Adventure Skeletons is very simple. Players can do this before the game or during the first fifteen minutes of their first session. There are no levels to worry about, no books or stat roll, just a few steps to follow. Here are the basics: 1. Pick a type of monster to be. I'll provide a list of ideas, but I encourage creativity! Your monster should be some kind of creature that would be doing grunt work in your old dungeon, not running things or taking down powerful heroes by yourself. 2. Pick what your main strength is. You might be buff, sneaky, magical, or even use the powers of being creepy to your advantage! 3. Pick your equipment. Just a few things to help you on your adventures. I will provide character sheets (including a version with space to draw your monster) and the full character creation instructions.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We'll use Roll20 for the map and Discord for video and audio. Please make sure you have an account for each, as well as a camera and mic. Video is not strictly required but strongly encouraged, since it helps both your fellow players and your GM read conversational cues. Please read the rulesheet I will provide prior to play, including how characters are created, so that we can more easily dive into playing during the session! You may begin character creation ahead of time, and message me with any questions you have. Dice! Since we will be using Roll20, you may us the digital dice there, or use your own set of digital or physical polyhedral dice. The most common one we will use is the d10, but others will factor in!

What Dex G brings to the table

Adventureville uses the extremely rules-light Adventure Skeletons system, with slight modifications to allow for other, non-skeletal player characters. I'll have a downloadable rulesheet for you as well as a character sheet. What's it like to play a game with Dex? I'm an illustrator in my day job, so all maps and a majority of tokens will use my own artwork. My games are generally pretty balanced between roleplay, battles, and problem solving, and always fairly chill. I'm here to facilitate a good time, share some laughs, and provide interesting scenarios for my players. I go by the rule of cool, or as I like to say, "I run on vibes" so suggest your heart's desire and I'll try to make it happen (so long as it fits the story and doesn't harm other player characters without their consent).

Homebrew rules

The Adventure Skeletons system is deliciously simple, but it is made for players to be skeletons, and I wanted to make a campaign where players have more freedom. This campaign is all about having the freedom to be yourself, after all! Because of this, I've made a couple of important changes and one minor one. Monster type: You can be any type of monster. You can still be a magically animated skeleton if you wish, but it's not required. The damage system of losing and gaining limbs still applies. Your monster might lose an arm and have a magical prosthetic! Or use the healing hags' proprietary healing magic to regrow one! Ancestry becomes Skill: Everyone is different, so why would you have to be buff & tough if you're a troll? Maybe you're a smarty pants instead, or so cheerful that you make friends wherever you go. It's up to you what your monster is like. Equipment: Players will get 3 pieces of equipment instead of 2, and I've expanded the list of starting items.

Safety

How Dex G creates a safe table

Broken Chains: Minions No More is a comfy little sandbox world where monsters (our players), can explore, solve problems, and have fun. There are many possible quests to find, and some of these may have elements that touch on difficult topics, fears, and trauma. I always encourage players to message me or speak up at the table if there is anything that makes them uncomfortable. My job is to ensure that all players are having a good time, so I take player comfort and consent very seriously.
