About the adventure
- They needed a team. They got…you. - A renowned but either desperate or delusional patron has contracted you. They need a team to go on a job for them, and somehow they think you will be “a great fit for this exciting opportunity”. Whatever your reasons for showing up, you have. At least it pays well. You’re sure it pays well. That’s what you heard. - Strap in for Troika!: The Wild Cards, a gloriously chaotic fantasy RPG. - Played using the Troika! system, your journey unfolds across the Humpbacked Sky, a realm where floating islands, impossible creatures, and desperate patrons await your unlikely talents. Forget your traditional heroes; you're part of an eccentric crew navigating the bewildering, multi-sphered cosmos of Troika! Expect strange jobs, even stranger creatures, and adventures that will test both skill and luck. In The Wild Cards we have just started the Eye of the Aeons adventure material. They’ve stolen a feral baby unicorn from a street vendor and are impressing their conscious will upon a mysterious friend acquired in the Blancmange & Thistle Hotel lift to shape it into a hob-clone of one of the party members. One of them doesn’t have any hands and doesn’t know how to access their inventory as a result. Whatever else you currently do in this time slot of your life, you’re missing out. After this adventure completes the player group will vote whether to go forward with another adventure in the same campaign or regret all their life choices and swear to never play Troika! again. Either way, why not join us for a few evenings? There's much laughter at this table. It’s a campaign that focuses on the rule of cool and role playing, as well as having fun. No idea how long it will last, it depends on what pace and tone the group decide to set. The players own this, not the GM. We will play using Discord and the theatre of the mind. Maps where provided are given as images on Discord. Don’t worry if you haven’t played the system before. We will teach as we play. The GM (that’s me, hi) will provide a level 2 boosted Discord server for your group that has a dice bot, background information on the system including rules summaries, a form fillable pdf for character sheets if you want to use it, and the option of background music during the session through a sound bot. We have a code of conduct and safety checklists to make sure that we remember to treat each other like human beings and can have fun in a made-up world without making each other personally upset (ain’t nobody got time for that).

About me
Hello there. I’m Suse. I’m a Moodwright here to guide you through worlds where the weird and wonderful collide. I’ve been running games for over 25 years, playing through character sheets untold to bring these stories to the StartPlaying portal. Roll sanity checks for me in Delta Green Ask to hear my Devil's Bargain in Blades in the Dark Indulge me on how your ogre sous chef cooks up a storm in Troika! Or roll +Cool in Monster of the Week after I’ve made a Hard Move against you. I’m a ‘yes, and’ kind of Ref with a dash of ‘Rule of Cool’. I believe the best stories are those we tell together, where your wild ideas are celebrated and your characters shine in the spotlight. My table is always safe, inclusive, and ready for you. Who will you play at my table?

So, updating this as its been a dozen or so sessions now? I've been in a couple of games of Suse's so far and am probably going to join a third one soon, so that somewhat speaks for itself. But why? Not every game needs to be a another fighty DnD game, and instead what i get from Suse is a real nice deep narrative that is as far from a railroad as one could hope to get. I genuinely get to feel like a character with agency, which only helps encourage good roleplay and even a bit of collaborative world building too. She even helped me with my character art :)
Suse is a fantastic GM. She did a thorough and streamlined session 0, had clearly put in a tonne of work in preparation, and had us onboarded and ready to go smoothly and easily. Now that we have begun the game proper, the story is interesting; the atmosphere is thrilling; the use of art, music, and effects is impressive without being distracting; and the overall experience has been incredible. I cannot recommend Suse' games enough - a wonderful experience all-around!
Update: Since my first review I've found myself enjoying her games so much that I've not only continued with the MOTW game but have also been playing a troika game that she has been running on start playing, which today has come to a close. Very different game but she managed it brilliantly and it was fun as hell even though we came dangerously close to getting TPK'd by someone with the weakest of knives! The dice were not on our side that day! Am very sad that it's over but looking forward to an opportunity to play something new too! --- So far only just on session zero, so a lot of it was the initial setup but Suse was very good, she ran through and clearly described how everything was going to work, she talked through rules, code of conduct and checked in with everyone with a survey on any potential trigger subjects. She worked with us all both in public and in private channels to help us finish off our characters, their back stories and individual hooks into the game. This gave us some time for all the players to get to know each other as well as to understand the game. Because she gave us our hooks and so forth individually, once everyone was setup and we started to play, we were able unveil our characters to each other so there is still a fair amount of mystery about them, so you get the joy of that slow reveal. Not only that but she had prepared background music to set the tone, and materials showing us the places and the NPC characters that we were meeting and a map of the town, but she only revealed these to us as we encountered each of the places and people. Overall very happy with the story, and excited to see where it's going!
Character creation
Creating your character
Character creation is easy! You'll be given a link to a web generator and a form fillable PDF. Roll on the former, transcribe the results to the latter, have a chat with the GM by Discord message or a short face to face call to fill in any gaps.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You’ll need a Discord account and some kind of internet capable device to access it. Microphone recommended to help sound quality as all game play is theatre of the mind. Quiet space to play from to reduce background noise/distraction beneficial for the same reason. You don’t need to read anything ahead of time. A dice bot will be provided or you can use your own dice.
What Suse brings to the table
I’m a ‘yes, and’ kind of ref with a dash of ‘rule of cool’. I believe the best stories are those we tell together, where your wild ideas are celebrated and your characters truly shine in their spotlight, in a safe and welcoming environment. You can expect plenty of room to tell your own part of the collective story and an equal share of the spotlight. I get a lot of personal joy running Troika! and am looking forward to sharing this with you all.
