Crown of the Oathbreaker (gritty lvl 5-15 campaign!)

About the adventure
Session 0 and 1 are free! Travel the Kingdom of Aglarion, and even across other planes of existence, to undo the Midnight Curse that threatens the realm, as well as the world at large. Crown of the Oathbreaker is a gritty fantasy setting, where it will largely be up to the party to inject hope and light into the dark times the world faces. I normally run beginner friendly games, and having read through the campaign book, this is NOT one of those. It pulls no punches, and you will have a great deal of challenges to overcome. Not to mention that the player friendly shortened world history pamphlet it expects players to read over when making characters is 90+ pages long. Expect high roleplay, high lore, high puzzle solving, and high combat tactics. That being said, I like to run games to tell a story and have fun. I welcome homebrew classes, spells, items, etc upon review. I allow rule of cool moments to keep the game going and I'll review RAW later. While this is a VERY intense campaign, I like keeping my players alive and will give a fair warning if a combat or type of enemy is out to kill the party (instead of knock you out, negotiate, etc). TLDR: If you are an experienced player looking for a long campaign that will out you and your party to the test, this is the game for you!

Proficiencies
Players say this GM is great at:
Creativity
Teacher
Voices
Just finished up the dragonlance campaign with Max and I have to say, I had a blast. The story telling was great as was the effort in voicing characters and allowing for player creativity. Also never hesitated to help if there was a ruling or ability which wasn't straight to the point on how it could be used. I'm looking forward to continuing in another upcoming adventure. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Another adventure in the books with DM Max The ghosts of saltmarsh was quite the adventure with a few twists and turns that were rather unexpected but everything was definitely a blast..... no one blew up a warehouse by accident i don't know what you're talking about. Looking forward to the next adventure!!!
Max is the best. Every session was a blast and the highlight of my week. He has a great personality, is patient, and a ton of fun to joke around with. Fostering and inspiring creativity in each session, Max never railroaded our party and encouraged open world exploration. Our characters' decisions directly impacted the world around us in an authentic way. Our backgrounds were all incorporated into the story and Max did an amazing job concluding our campaign for each individual character as well as for the town. He also responds quickly to discord messages and gives thorough explanations. Max also does an amazing job running combat. It flows well and his descriptions are so interesting you can picture the whole thing in your head perfectly. After our first campaign with Max, our whole party signed up for another campaign with him. Just play with him already.
Character creation
Creating your character
You are welcome to create a character before session 0, but session 0 will be dedicated to finalizing characters/helping make them, going over table rules/limits, campaign lore/themes, etc. I usually ask players to roll for their stats. You can roll 2 groups of stats. Pick one of those groups to use. If you hate both, you can use Standard Array or Point Buy. I'm not picky, and you can use Point Buy or Array from the get-go. Characters will be created on DnD Beyond and will start at level 5. If there is anything, such as homebrew, that you would like to use, let me know and I'll try to add it to DnD Beyond for you to use. I understand backstories can be difficult, but given how this campaign is written, I will provide a reward to any player who gives me a detailed backstory to work with.
What to expect
Preparing for the session
You will need a microphone and a Discord account, as this is how we will communicate to each other. You will need a DnD Beyond account (no subscription required) to create a character, join the campaign, see the map, etc. As this campaign is meant for advanced players, I would hope that you are familiar with the rules of DnD 5e, but I will do my best to help any player who is newer to the game learn the ropes! Creating a character ahead of time is not required, but having a rough idea of what you'd like to do (as well as maybe backup character concepts) is appreciated!
What Max brings to the table
I use DnD Beyond for character creation, roll tracking, and maps. I use voices to try and distinguish NPCs from each other, but you as a player are not required to do any voices. For any NPC or creature I'm not confident in my ability to voice act, I will do my best to provide narrative or flavorful description to help define them. I run my enemies with tactics based on their stats, the situation, etc. If an enemy is fighting the party with the intent to kill them, I will make this known to the party. That being said, this campaign in particular has a lot of fairly stressful combat encounters. I am NOT out to kill your character, but character death is very possible. If you want to do something crazy that is stretching the rules, I welcome it! I encourage player creativity, even if it gets silly. In a sense, I embrace rule of cool in the moment to keep the game going, but may review RAW later to determine whether you can pull such shenanigans again.
Homebrew rules
1. Feeding yourself a potion is a bonus action. 2. At the end of every session, the party votes who to reward inspiration to. Can't vote for yourself. Those who already have inspiration are not up for vote. 3. Inspiration can be used to "Phone a DM". Could be anywhere from a one time form of "communion", or a "I lost the plot" direction guide. 4. Swan Song: If your character has died (failed all death saves, took full hp negative, etc), you can choose to "Swan Song". Roll 1d4, add your con modifier, minimum of one. That is how many rounds you are back up and running. All attacks are at advantage, you regain all abilities and spells, all hits are considered critical. If you get hit, deduct one round from your round count. When this count reaches zero, you truly die. No resurrection, no wish spells, no divine intervention. You are dead dead. 5. At the end of the campaign, whoever won the most inspiration throughout the campaign (and stuck around to see the end of it) will win a free homebrew of their choice based on the character they just played. 6. Click: When a trap is triggered, I will say "click" and ask for a reaction. You can throw yourself prone into an adjacent spot, cast a reaction spell, raise a shield, hold your breath, etc. Your choice can impact your roll. Drop to the floor and arrows shoot out? Get advantage or auto-succeed the dodge. Drop to the floor and the floor gives out? Auto fail.

How Max creates a safe table
Session 0 is where I go over character creation, and will definitely spend time trying to help explain world lore and things to help you fit your character to the world. We'll discuss any hard limits people have, homebrew rules we wish to use, etc. At anytime, the party can agree to take a break for any reason, whether something intense happened or to have a moment to plan their moves. After every session, I'll ask if everyone had fun and give time to debrief. This is a time to provide feedback or simply relax from anything that happened during play. If you're not comfortable providing feedback in a semi-public setting, my private messages are always open (open door) and you're always welcome to send me a message.
