About Max
Hi! I'm Max, and I've been a DM for half a decade now! I love telling stories, and helping players like you feel like the powerful hero (or villain) you are!

I got started GMing...
During COVID when my workplace shut down. They scheduled social get-togethers to maintain contact with us and hang out, and I recommended DnD. It lasted through quarantine and well into when we opened back up for business. That workplace is permanently shut down now, but my passion continues!
The three words my players would use to describe me are...
"Don't worry about-" I asked my various groups what three words they would use, but the best they came up with was my catchphrase of "Don't worry about it", which is sadly four words. Interpret this as you will, but my players have started using it in good jest for any hairbrained plan they use.
When I'm not running games I'm...
Writing scripts for short films, reading fantasy and sci-fi novels, or planning novels!
How Max runs games
I once told my group it was getting late and time to head home, packing up my dice. They all corrected me they had just awoken from their long rest and were quite a ways from their keep. My goal as a DM is to create an experience so immersive you can live and breathe the impossible. With an array of voice acting, music shenanigans, and lots of careful combat strategizing, I hope to deliver a fun, challenging, and rewarding experience with every session!

I deal with rules issues by...
Keeping the game moving. If something seems exceptionally powerful, but there's not an immediate clarification to negate it, I'll allow players to do it once, and look up how its supposed to work later. Have your cool moment, be powerful, but understand it may be a one-time deal. Etc.
My favorite trope is...
Messing up normal names for a fantasy world. Eric Withakay. Or the four doppelganger brothers: Jeff, Geoff, Jeph, and Geoph. Having a bard band called the Minstrel Cycle. Tongue-in-cheek stupid humor to sprinkle in whenever I can. Players seem to enjoy it!
My games focus on...
Story and character arcs, especially any custom campaigns I run. My goal is to create a world to immerse yourself in that you desire to explore and interact with, knowing your actions will ripple out into the wider realm.
Max's ideal table
The vibe of the table should always be friends gathered together to play a game. The only politics I want to discuss are those between elves and dwarves. Players should understand the separation of character and player (as well as DM and character), and that the goal is to have fun. If you enjoy cracking jokes with friends, but still able to direct your shenanigans loosely in the direction of the plot, then my table is open to you. If you enjoy telling a story over plotless dungeon crawls, my table is open to you.

I love it when a player
Not only puts effort into a backstory, but tries to include parts of the setting in their backstory. Something I can sink my teeth into and run with. Sometimes a backstory fleshes out 90% of the game world for me when I get to run with it. Nothing feels better than a player engaged with lore.
I think it's a red flag when players...
Don't wish to tell me their plan. I am not here to work against you, I am here to narrate how your actions develop the situation. Communicate your intent. I want you to look cool and smart! I actively encourage creative solutions! Please communicate with your DM.
My perfect party mix is
Whatever tells a story, and lets the party live long enough to tell the story. Party of clerics called the A-Men? Perfect. Want to play as a sentient hat, passed down as an heirloom to another player? Perfect. I do want your character to fit the setting, but otherwise let your creativity run wild!
