Tales from the Yawning Portal

Tales from the Yawning Portal

Dungeons & Dragons 5e | Campaign

About the adventure

Through whispered words and minstrel songs, the tales of long-lost treasures, ancient temples and incredible dangers are spread among the commonfolk. Most of them are excited to talk about these ludicrous tales in hushed tones and drunken conversations, but too afraid or uncaring to actually explore these mysterious places for themselves. But not you. You hear those tales and where some find danger and risk, you find opportunity and adventure. Today is the day. The day you stop listening to these tales and become part of them. Today you become an adventurer. - Tales from the Yawning Portal is a D&D classic, being comprised of seven different adventures that take the characters from level 1 to around level 15. This is a particularly good module for beginners, as the stories are less intricate than others, but veteran players can also enjoy the game as good return to the classics. I value creativity and roleplay, even when GMing a module like this one. Using a spell in a creative way to disable a trap? Awesome. Convinced the enemies to go away through roleplay and persuasion? Brilliant. Disabled a whole encounter through strategy and planning? I hate you, but still amazing. I also like to add fun twists and surprises along the way, so even if you've already played through this module or know the monster stats by heart, don't expect things to go the same way.

Game style

Dungeon Crawl

A “Dungeon Crawl” is a scenario where players navigate a dungeon or labyrinth-like environment for the entirety of the adventure. It emphasizes battling monsters, collecting loot, and avoiding traps to survive to the end!

Combat Heavy

“Combat Heavy” games emphasize the combat mechanics within their systems over roleplay or puzzle solving. There are frequent and longer battles with enemies and a greater emphasis on tactical game play.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

I've been playing in Felipe's games for over two years. He helped me learn how to play Table Top RPGs with patience and humor. He is especially good for new players but keeps things interesting for the veterans as well. Stop reading this review and sign up for a one-shot with Felipe. You won't regret it. But I have to sing his praises for a little longer. I've mostly played DND 5e with Felipe. He has created an entire homebrew setting called Irhafel complete with custom magic items, homebrew races, and classes. It is staggering the level of detail and immersion he brings into the world. I really like how he asks the players what they are interested in knowing about a new city or group of people and he can work interesting things about their culture, economy, and history into the role play. Felipe keeps combat moving and engaging. He has a ton of maps and tricks up his sleeve to make exploration feel genuinely scary and surprising. He brings a wide cast of NPCs into the roleplay and always leaves space for players to have cool moments. I've also played one-shots with other TTRPG systems and he excels at those as well. Felipe really cares about his players having fun. There are delicate ways to address inter-player dynamics to make sure everyone is having fun and I've seen Felipe manage several of those in a way that address the issue and makes sure the whole group can get back on track. Very impressive emotional intelligence and communication skills.

Creativity, innovation. A wealth of knowledge and imagination to add his own elements to a story. Would easily, and happily recommend or join for future sessions/one-shots/campaigns.

Felipe is incredibly well versed in the rules, combat is fun and fast paced and his tactics will keep you thinking on your feet. He brings also brings supplemental third party sources that put a great twist on an already fun game.

How to prepare

All players need a Roll20 and a discord accounts for the game and, since we'll be playing online, a good enough mic is essential. It's also important to read the basic rules of D&D 5e before the game so that things flow better, and beginner players can feel free to message me with any questions they may have.

What I provide

I have all the official material necessary for the game prepped in Rol20 and some extra content I'll be creating for the game as well. I have also prepared playlists to be used for ambience on discord, if the players are comfortable with that (for instance, music can be a problem for some neurodivergent people).

Gameplay details

Content Warnings: Fantasy violence, possible character death This is a classic medieval fantasy game, and as such, combat and traps are going to be present. These may lead to character death, depending on the players' choices and/or luck on the dice rolls. Other themes may be present as well, such as alcohol, drugs, etc, but these will be discussed during session 0 and will only be present if all players are ok with them. Some themes are forbidden and may result in a player's expulsion if insisted upon: Homophobia; transphobia; sexual violence; unnecessary violence or betrayal of other player characters (PvP).
