Hogmanay Horror | Call of Cthulhu | Beginner-friendly
Call of Cthulhu | One-Shot
About the adventure
Scotland, 1923: you and your fellow players have been invited to a Hogmanay (New Year's Eve) celebration hosted by Sir John Maxwell at his estate in Corrour in the Scottish highlands. You are to be wined and dined whilst ringing in the New Year, then follow it up with a bout of hunting on the vast estate. However, a blizzard quickly sets in, and with the arrival of some expected guests, comes a terrifying mystery. Prior knowledge of the setting or game system are not required, just the willingness to explore the darkest of corners, and accept the risks of such a venture (in-character, of course).

Creativity
Sets the Mood
World Builder
Gives players the freedom to make their own choices. Does a great job on setting up the scene and atmosphere. Every generous with new players. During moments of the session he asked us players a few times what our characters are feeling, which really helps you get in your characters mindset.
I had a great time with Darkmalice in a Call of Cthuhlu adventure! He definitely knows how to set the tone for a Lovecraftian horror. The game went WELL over the estimated length but he was happy to just keep rolling with us until the story was completed. I recommend Darkmalice, especially if you enjoy getting goosebumps.
I've been in a few campaigns he's run by now; always impressed with how he can think on his feet and keep the story going regardless of what weird direction the players might want to take it. His systems also tend to be more narrative and not so heavy on numbers, which is great for freedom or for new players - definitely made it easier for me as a beginner. Some of the times our party's decided to go off on a tangent, he's developed ideas the party's presented and incorporated them into the world; little details or elements introduced back when I was playing a different character have showed up again in a different campaign. There's a good level of interactivity to the worldbuilding. The campaigns I've been in have had some comedy mixed into them, but I know he's run some darker ones. From how he handles our more serious scenes, I'm sure he does more than fine in them.
I was a necromancer/shadowmancer in a longer homebrew campaign (Zero2Hero) for about maybe 6 months. Absolutely stunning world building and over all promotion of fun and inclusivity. Dark and creepy to exhilarating range. Great settings, story, characters, even did a great job accomodating our wildcard character (though sometimes in a punishing manner - players beware!) :) In all good fun, it was a great group and time. I also played his pokemon detective rpg spinoff one offs. Beautiful visual guides and theater of the mind style (no visuals) capability. We used the 2d8 systems over roll20 and discord but I have no doubt he is well versed in a broad array of platform and genres. 10/10 would recommend!

How to prepare
A steady internet connection and good quality mic is required, as is an account for using Discord. I do not use or require you to use a camera. Foundry is accessed via your internet browser, and supported by all the major browsers. If your microphone's audio quality is consistently poor, I'm afraid I cannot have you playing in the campaign. Prior knowledge of the rules is not required. This is a horror-investigation game, and should be approached with the appropriate attitude, and a preparedness for topics/descriptions typical of the genre.
What I provide
Full disclosure: I have minimal experience running the CoC system. However, I have over twelve years of experience running a large variety of game types, including Lovecraftian-horror one-shots and campaigns, across multiple game systems. I bring a self-hosted Foundry server with scene images, ambient audio, handouts and interactive character sheets, and a vivid imagination.
Gameplay details
At the beginning of sessions, players will have the opportunity to declare/define their Lines and Veils. Within sessions, players will be able to call a pause or halt to the subject matter at hand, should they feel the need to do so. Anyone needing to leave the table for any reason is entirely acceptable. Pre/Post-session discussion about anything at all will be available. We'll be using Discord for voice-chat, so a decent mic is required. I do not use or require cameras. We'll be using my hosted Foundry for images, handouts and additional audio. No account is required. Links to each will be provided prior to play.

How will character creation work
I will supply a selection of pre-generated player-characters to save time and allow us to get into playing. We can walk through changing the existing characters, or creating new ones as you desire, should you have strong feelings about playing a particular character. New characters can be created using the Foundry Character Wizard, which walks you through the process, and allows you to use any of the permitted creation styles (point buy, rolling stats, etc.) The character sheets will be hosted on my Foundry instance, and accessible outside of the game on request. No prior knowledge is required, just bring an enthusiasm to delve into the mystery before you. I shall have back-up characters on standby, should yours meet an untimely fate mid-session, so you are not left out of the action.
