About the adventure

Welcome to the Candlekeep Library, an ancient and mystical library brimming with mysteries, forgotten knowledge, and arcane wonders. Deep within the heart of this library lies a vast collection of powerful tomes and scrolls, many containing secrets that could alter the very fabric of reality itself. But not all is well within the hallowed halls of this magical sanctuary. Whispers echo through its towering shelves, and something dark stirs beneath the carefully organized shelves and labyrinthine archives. As archivists, scholars, or adventurers summoned by an unexplained magical urge, you have been drawn to this place not only to uncover its secrets but to investigate a series of unsettling mysteries that threaten the stability of the library—and perhaps the world outside it. Each mystery in this campaign is tied to a powerful artifact, enchanted book, or arcane event. You'll face strange occurrences that defy logic, puzzles hidden within ancient manuscripts, and dangerous forces attempting to control the flow of knowledge for their own twisted ends. With magic in the air, hidden passageways to forgotten realms, and cursed tomes bound in unearthly materials, your path will be filled with danger, intrigue, and wonder. This campaign is based on the D&D 5e anthology Candlekeep Mysteries. We will begin with these stories as a baseline, and either follow the sourcebook or veer off on our own. Bring your most absurd homebrews, those species you've never gotten to play, and all the sleuthing you can muster, and let's save this library!

About me

Hi lads, lasses, and all ye besides! I’m Sam, I've been a DM for about 5 years, consumer of D&D shows for 10, and avid reader and artist for my life. I’m queer and AuDHD, and all of those identities are extremely welcome at my tables, as are any others. I intentionally take time to make each of my players feel safe, as well as endowing them with absurd amounts of creative agency. The only things not accepted or tolerated at my tables are bigotry, abuse, and anything that makes other players feel unsafe. Also, I’m an artificer in real life, which is the most fun way I can think of to say I make handmade TTRPG dice, character art, maps, and minis!

Character creation

Creating your character

Everyone will start at 1st level for the first mystery, The Joy of Extradimensional Spaces, and we’ll do character creation as our first session. I’ll handle all of the books and math, all you need is your creativity, sense of humor, and joy. We'll roll 4d6 drop the lowest for stats, but you can bring a pre-made character if you like!

What to expect

Preparing for the session

We’ll do everything together! Webcam is only necessary if you want to be on screen, which is an option but not required. You will need a mic, speaker, or headphones, Discord, and a working internet browser, but all else is prepared!

What Sam brings to the table

I come with maps, minis, and an endless amount of snaking plot. In addition, I have an absurd amount of accents and voices, improv experience, and a well-honed D&D Beyond account. I've spent many years improving homebrew worlds for characters and players, and adore doing this. I'll likely make maps and homebrew content specifically for your adventure and also spend most of my time making TTRPG dice and custom character art. We’ll play Rule of Cool (as long as it doesn’t break the game) and all improved input and world-building is accepted and appreciated!

Safety

How Sam creates a safe table

Everyone will fill out a consent form prior to any gameplay, and I'll make sure that none of the ticked issues come up. I'll also send out a Session 0 sheet which we can all talk about together! Everyone is always welcome to leave a session if they're uncomfortable, and my DMs are always open for any issues or concerns. We also use a stoplight system where any player can send up a red, yellow, or green light to show that they are uncomfortable. Players can also message me privately. We will also do debrief and stars and wishes depending on the players' preferences.
