About the adventure

What you will find in this campaign: **Interesting and unique NPCs! **Unsettling encounters! **Twisty plotlines! **Interesting side quests! **Beholders! **Scary, unexpected monsters! **Cool magic! **A massive city to explore! **Loads of roleplay with your fellow PCs! Waterdeep! City of intrigue and wonder! Rumors abound here, including one that insists half a million gold coins are hidden somewhere in the city. What would you do with that kind of money? The city is also threatened by escalating tension between two power groups on the verge of flaring into violence. The Zhentarim, a shadowy network of mercenaries, and Xanathar, the beholder crime lord of Waterdeep. The wise party stays out of the way of them both, but will that be an option when they are also hunting for this treasure? In this campaign, you will: **Learn to rely on your teammates. Your character should 100% be motivated to be in a party. Loners should only join if they are tired of being alone and willing to give up solitude for companionship. **Visit an amazing, huge city! There are shops, taverns, inns, temples, rich neighborhoods and seedy neighborhood, sewers and cemeteries, docks and outskirts. Opportunities for exploration are endless. **Immerse yourself in the rich history and lore of this city and determine if it really is the jewel of the Sword Coast. **Test your characters’ abilities and lean into your backstories, because things from those backstories will be cropping up, both good and bad. **Play games of strategy with the powers-that-be! Sometimes you will win, and sometimes not. In this campaign, I focus on loosely running the campaign, with plenty of opportunity for your characters to embark on side quests and follow their own motivations. This is far more of a sandbox than a railroad, but beware, the plotline will move along whether the party participates or not. Free Session Zero to go over character creation and the encyclopedia of rules, guidelines, and changes that is geared not to overwhelm, but to ensure that fun is had by all participants.

About me

I got into D&D back in the olden days when the game was young and after all this time I'm still not bored with it! Playing is fun but I find DMing more rewarding as I love to create new places, scenarios, and characters, and to cook up original plots and adventures. I love to make maps and guide players through them, but I also appreciate theater of the mind when maps can be too limiting. I love teaching new people to play, so feel free to message me if you are too intimidated to join a group. Solo games are always an option!

Character creation

Creating your character

Characters should be created beforehand and I am willing to walk anyone through character creation anytime before the game, and to go over any concerns at that time. If you join mid-campaign, I'll let you know what level your character should be. I will have premade characters available for anyone undecided or dropping in at the last moment. You can create characters in D&D Beyond or FoundryVTT, or scribble them on a piece of paper. As long as I have a copy, you're good to go.

The current party

Current party makeup: Dwarf fighter (battle master) Eladrin bard (school of dance) Eladrin warlock (archfey) Halfling wizard (divination)

What to expect

Preparing for the session

You will need a free FoundryVTT account for maps and gameplay, and a Discord account for voice and chat, with a working microphone. I don't use video, (although you can if you like) so don't worry about having a camera. Digital dice can be rolled in Foundry, on D&D Beyond, or you can use your own physical dice and call out the numbers - dice goblins welcome!

What dysonrules brings to the table

I live by the Rule of Cool and will often hand-wave rules as written to let the PCs do a fun, cool thing. If you live and breathe by the rules, this will probably annoy you, but if you want your dwarf to jump on a shield and rocket down a snowy slope into the group of enemies like a bowling ball hitting a stack of pins (without a 30 minute pause to look up rules on how it would be acceptable in the confines of the rules), this is definitely the campaign for you. I will also create amazing tokens for your characters, provide all maps and handouts via Foundry and Discord, and give you a super cool experience that you won't soon forget.

Homebrew rules

Drinking a potion is a bonus action; administering a potion to another is an action. Using an action to drink a potion will give you the maximum effect without rolling. Flanking gives you a +2 to your melee attack roll. Death saves should be rolled in private to the GM. If you aren't happy with your character, talk to me and I will be glad to work with you to make changes, even up to making a new character and letting the old one walk into the sunset. If your build isn't as fun as you thought it would be, you don't have to suffer with it. Do you hate your warlock and wish she was a sorcerer? Then let's make her a sorcerer! I am not a rigid GM and will be happy to discuss changes you want to make, even mid-campaign.

Safety

How dysonrules creates a safe table

We will go over all of the warnings during Session 0 and draw hard lines through things that are unacceptable to players. Phobias are real and I want everyone to be able to play and have a good time. I use Discord for all voice and chat, so players can use the Discord PM to send me a private note anytime they need to discuss something or call a timeout. Aftercare will be tailored to the player's needs and will be gone over during Session 0. You will need a free Foundry/TheForge account for maps and combat.
