About the adventure

It was supposed to be a simple job. Just delivering mining equipment to a frontier backwater for an old friend. But it all went sideways. Now you're caught up in something bigger, infinitely more dangerous, and your choices in Phandalin could change the balance of power throughout the Sword Coast. Welcome, Adventurers! If you're new to D&D or returning to the hobby after a long absence, this is the perfect place to start. This original adventure features all the elements of classic D&D: - Powerful magic items - Mysterious dungeons - Sinister traps - Tantalizing treasure - Evil villains - And, of course, the occasional dragon In this campaign, we'll focus on learning to play using the new 5th edition 2024 ruleset. You'll strive to save Phandalin from a mysterious villain while learning the game through actual play. This approach makes learning fun and easy, while diminishing the anxiety that sometimes accompanies trying new hobbies. Everyone at this table is new, making it a safe space to learn, find D&D friends, and kick-start your entry into the hobby.

About me

**NOTE**: If you aren't seeing a campaign or one-shot you'd like to join at a time you're available, message me about a custom adventure. I'm flexible on scheduling and happy to run most modules or home-brew games. I love storytelling! IRL, I'm a professional ghostwriter and a forever DM, running several multi-year campaigns. I've been playing D&D since the 90s and DMing 5e since 2015. So if you are looking for a game where we blend thrilling combat, compelling social encounters, and worldbuilding exploration to create captivating, collaborative stories, this is the table for you!

Character creation

Creating your character

We'll create characters together during Session Zero. If we have players who have never made a character on D&D Beyond before, I'll do a walk through of the process. Either way, I'll be present throughout to answer any questions that might arise.

The current party

As this campaign is already in progress, all new players are required to complete a quick Session Zero. After you join the campaign and my Discord server, I'll reach out via Discord to set up a time that works for you.

What to expect

Preparing for the session

For this campaign, you'll need the following: - Discord account - D&D Beyond account - A microphone or headset suitable for use on Discord (your phone can work for this if you have a quiet area to play) - A computer, laptop, tablet, or a combination of these capable of running both Discord and D&D Beyond simultaneously. - Webcams are optional We'll use Disord to talk during the sessions. Once you secure your spot in the game, you'll receive the link to join my server. We'll use D&D Beyond Maps for our VTT. I understand that this is a new platform for many people. However, it's straightforward to use and runs easily on most computers. There's nothing to download for it, and I'll do an orientation to it during Session Zero. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions as you prepare for the session.

What RJ Currer brings to the table

- D&D Beyond Maps as the VTT - Discord channel for gameplay - A fun, dynamic, adaptive DM-style - Collaborative atmosphere - Intense in-game challenges - A strong, evocative narrative style - Thematic background music - Almost 30 years of experience with D&D - A decade of experience DMing for D&D 5e - Character voices (I mean, I'm no voice actor, but I do my best.)

Homebrew rules

While I'm primarily a rules-as-written DM, there is still room for Rule of Cool in my game. Feel free to get creative, and I'll roll with it unless there's a good reason not to. I still use the optional flanking rule, where creatures get advantage on attacks if an ally is on the opposite side of the target. This applies to most monsters/NPCs. However, some creatures (like those with blindsight) are not subject to this rule.

Safety

How RJ Currer creates a safe table

Our first session will start with a Session Zero, during which I orient everyone to my style of gameplay, build characters, and go over the safety tools used. If Session Zero doesn't take up the whole time (and it probably won't), we'll jump into Session 1 and start the adventure.
