THE MONSTER HUNTING CLUB - High School's Never Been This Scary!

Monster of the Week | Campaign

About the adventure

High school should've been complicated enough as is. Last week you were concerned about whether Gina actually liked you and how long to wait before texting Aaron back without seeming like you were waiting by the phone, but this week... You know what lurks in the shadows. You know to be afraid of the dark. You know that you are what stands between your classmates and the horrors of what lays beyond. Yet, even with this weight on your shoulders... you still have that World History essay due tomorrow. Join this Monster of the Week campaign and do high school over again! You and your friends must defend your families, classmates, and the entire town from the monsters that would harm them. Discover where these creatures come from, fight epic battles, and unravel the mysteries of your town. Though, at the end of the day, the most stressful part of your life might still be trying to get your crush to like you back...

Game style

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Rule of Cool (RoC)

“Rule of Cool” emphasizes creative story beats over sticking to a system’s rules as written. Players have the ability to push the limits of the rules or even break core rule mechanics at times if the Game Master thinks it is interesting, fun, or cool enough.

Roleplay Heavy

“Roleplay Heavy” games place the focus on the story, the characters, and the world they live within, and tend to lean hard into the various roleplaying elements of the game. These games will frequently find the party talking with NPCs, exploring the personal elements of their backstories, or even having emotional moments around the camp fire.

Party notes

Every other Thursday! Emphasis on roleplaying and having fun! Our group is super fun, with great and generous role-players who leave room for you to explore your character. This game is episodic in nature and plays like a TV show from the 90s or early 2000s. Lots of opportunities for you to world build and create the character you want to play! Currently requiring a request to join, just so we can chat about the game and make sure it's a good fit for you!

I've played in several sessions with Zach, and I always have a blast. Zach is a skilled DM/GM as well as a wonderful actor and improviser, and he always makes sure the group has a great time. He's great at incorporating everything each player is looking for in a game, and he is a fantastic storyteller. I highly recommend him for any and all games!

A friendly and welcoming GM, Zach incorporates player ideas into his worldbuilding and storytelling and creates a space where players are eager to share their ideas. The idea of level 0 peasant campaign may not sound exciting, but Zach's vivid descriptions and roleplaying brought the world to life and made even small things feel big.

I recently played in a short mystery campaign DMed by Zack, and I had an absolute blast! Zach is an all around nice guy, a great DM and a natural storyteller with a flair for setting a scene. I think one of the hallmarks of an excellent DM is when I, the player, genuinely have no idea what content was prepared versus what content is improvised on the spot, and Zach is so quick on his feet that he accomplishes that with ease. He's also great at meeting players where they are and playing to their interests in the kind of way that made me more excited to play DND than ever. The time I spent at his virtual table was such a good balance of fun, intrigue and drama. I definitely hope I get to join in another one of his campaigns in the future!

I've had the privilege of being GMed by Zach in person, as well as being in one of his games on StartPlaying! He's a terrific storyteller, making everything easy to visualize and easy to follow. He's also skilled at giving players confidence, especially for people like me who are still dipping their toes into more roleplay-focused campaigns, and the self-consciousness that comes with that. Just an all-around cool guy who I look forward to playing with again!

This was my first non-learning game and first experience with Monster of the Week. I loved every second! Zach’s cinematic descriptions and interesting NPCs really made the game come to life. It was so much fun and I can’t recommend him enough!

How will character creation work

Characters will be created together in our Session 0. The characters are deeply intertwined with connected histories and backstories, so it would be great to be able to do this together. Character creation is fairly simple for this system and should be easily accessible.
