About the adventure
Masks of Nyarlathotep: Is an epic multi-part campaign where heroic investigators must unravel secrets and battle the minions of darkness in an attempt to stop world-shattering events from destroying humanity. This tale of horror is a globe trotting campaign for Call of Cthulhu from Chaosium. It will be using the Pulp Cthulhu rules and the game will take place a decade later in the 1930's. Masks of Nyarlathotep is one of the most well known Call of Cthulhu campaigns and brings together the cosmic horror of HP Lovecraft with Pulp Cthulhu horror. The investigators will start the campaign in Peru on a search for an ancient pyramid. This expedition to discover a lost civilization will force the investigators to come face to face with ancient horrors that foreshadow the rest of the campaign. The setting is the early 1930s when America was in the grip of the Great Depression after the stock market crash on October 1929 sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors around the world. More than 30% of the world wide work force is unemployed by 1932. In the winter of 1928 US Treasury Department agents led a raid on small Massachusetts town called Innsmouth and found more than they bargained for. Herbert Hoover was elected President in November 1928, while Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly on a transatlantic flight that same year. In 1929 organized crime is rampant and Al Capones' gangsters had a shootout in Chicago in the St Valentines Day Massacre. In 1931 the US suffers the worst ever drought in its history, leading to the Dust Bowl years. The 1930's were a decade defined by a global economic and political crisis that culminated in the Second World War. There is much adventure and much danger during this time period. Who will you be? Masks of Nyarlathotep is suitable for 3 to 8 players. New players are welcome. This is a campaign set in the 1930's. You will generate a character with well integrated backstories prior to the first session.

Meet the Game Master
About me
It’s 1981 in Milwaukee Wisconsin, just an hour from Lake Geneva the birthplace of Dungeons and Dragons. It was an amazing summer that year because a classmate invited me over to play a new game called Dungeons and Dragons. Little did I know how it would change my life! We played through the campaign Scourge of the Slave Lords all summer long. It was an amazing summer. I still remember my first character Aragorn an archer ranger with a elven cloak who got turned to ash by a red dragon. Over the years I've played 1st Edition through 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons, along with extensive experience playing other RPG's. My favorite alternative to Dungeons and Dragons is Call of Cthulhu. Gaming is my primary hobby and I love role playing games of all kinds. I love weaving stories together cooperatively with my players and creating an environment where everyone feels both challenged by mind gripping dangers and proud to be the hero of the story. I want you to remember the game years later with a smile. I’ve been to almost every Gen Con since 1981 and several other game conventions both as a player and a game master. I’ve both played in and helped run the well known and popular Call of Cthulhu tournaments Novus Ordo Seclorum and Cthulhu Masters. Prior to the "great plague" I started running games at a local gaming tavern and soon helped start a gaming club called Adventurers Anonymous. We started with a small table and eventually grew to a gaming community of more than 100 people often filling up the bar with our players every Tuesday. We continued the community online weekly but I hope to share my experience as a game master with new players. A good roleplaying session can be better than the best book you’ve ever read or movie you’ve ever watched. Lets create a new memory and tell the stories of your characters together!

Creating your character
This is a Call of Cthulhu game where characters will be created with strong role playing ties written into their back stories. Characters will be created using the Call of Cthulhu character creation process in Session 0 using Fantasy Grounds to build them.
Every other Wednesday
What to expect
Preparing for the session
Players will need a microphone and good internet connection to connect to fantasy grounds. Webcams are strongly encouraged because I feel that player expressions are important to facilitate game play. If you absolutely do not feel comfortable using a webcam you will not be required too. Characters sheets and dice will be provided in fantasy grounds.
What GM Tony brings to the table
I will bring the rule system, character sheets, dice, maps and illustrations within fantasy grounds. I will bring a Safety Tool built into a fantasy grounds extension called HALT! which utilizes a modified X-Card system.

How GM Tony creates a safe table
Call of Cthulhu is a horror game with dark themes and heavy role playing encouraged. A Call of Cthulhu game utilizes role playing the character you've created and is akin to improv acting. I've given the game an 18+ rating because there may be adult themes. If you feel uncomfortable with something please let me know privately and I will address the issue immediately. We will have a Session 0 to discuss comfort levels and safety as well as expectations from the GM and Players. As a Safety Tool I use a modified X-Card system built into a fantasy grounds extension called HALT!. The HALT! extension is a MUST-HAVE for safety tools, that is simple and anonymous. The graphics are a simplified N/O/X type of system that is easy to use for newer players with results in the chat window for all to see. In HALT! there are two buttons, SLOW and STOP. All players can use these buttons at any time anonymously. If a button is pushed an alert is shown to the GM and all players stating either "This scene is getting uncomfortable. Please pause and consider everyone at the table." for SLOW and "This scene has gone to far. Please consider everyone at the table and roll back." for STOP. If a button is pushed we will reevaluate the scene and make adjustments to ensure the game provides safety and comfort for everyone.
