Call of Cthulhu : Masks of Nyarlathotep (Pulp Cthulhu, 1930's, CoC Campaign)

Call of Cthulhu, Pulp Cthulhu | Campaign

About the adventure

Masks of Nyarlathotep: Is an epic multi-part campaign where heroic investigators must unravel secrets and battle the minions of darkness in an attempt to stop world-shattering events from destroying humanity. This tale of horror is a globe trotting campaign for Call of Cthulhu from Chaosium. It will be using the Pulp Cthulhu rules and the game will take place a decade later in the 1930's. Masks of Nyarlathotep is one of the most well known Call of Cthulhu campaigns and brings together the cosmic horror of HP Lovecraft with Pulp Cthulhu horror. The investigators will start the campaign in Peru on a search for an ancient pyramid. This expedition to discover a lost civilization will force the investigators to come face to face with ancient horrors that foreshadow the rest of the campaign. The setting is the early 1930s when America was in the grip of the Great Depression after the stock market crash on October 1929 sent Wall Street into a panic and wiped out millions of investors around the world. More than 30% of the world wide work force is unemployed by 1932. In the winter of 1928 US Treasury Department agents led a raid on small Massachusetts town called Innsmouth and found more than they bargained for. Herbert Hoover was elected President in November 1928, while Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly on a transatlantic flight that same year. In 1929 organized crime is rampant and Al Capones' gangsters had a shootout in Chicago in the St Valentines Day Massacre. In 1931 the US suffers the worst ever drought in its history, leading to the Dust Bowl years. The 1930's were a decade defined by a global economic and political crisis that culminated in the Second World War. There is much adventure and much danger during this time period. Who will you be? Masks of Nyarlathotep is suitable for 3 to 8 players. New players are welcome. This is a campaign set in the 1930's. You will generate a character with well integrated backstories prior to the first session.

It was fun! Received a lot of help as this was my first experience with online tabletop, GM and players were very patient and accommodating. The other players were very entertaining. Love the backdrop. Good scenario. Looking forward to more play.

I was looking for a GM to help me get into Traveller (specifically the Mongoose 2E), and Tony and his crew of regulars were a bonus, as it was like stepping into that rarity, a group of good players AND a GM. It's enough to make me want to try out his other game systems that he runs. If you are a group looking for a GM who can take you from session 0 to play I'd definitely recommend Tony.

Amazing session. I had a lot of fun with this - awesome characters, crazy improv from players, plenty of challenge and interaction without being overwhelming or frustrating. Looking forward to future sessions!

Great game with a chill and fun atmosphere. I dropped in for one session and Tony made me feel as though I had been part of the campaign since the beginning. He has a strong grasp of Fantasy Grounds which was a huge help because I'm very bad at it. Great adventure, great DM!

The group was full and Tony kept everything on track. The party split and he still handled everything smoothly. Every question was answered satisfactorily and every player action was handled fairly and logically. Highly recommended!

If you think pen and paper should be Candyland walk-in-the-park power fantasies where the world bends to your player's whims, Tony is not a GM for you. If you want a man that can channel Gary Gygax himself with brutal encounters and head scratching dilemmas, while still ultimately being fair; where ingenuity and smart planning win the day, Tony is absolutely the DM for you. Be it good-ol' D&D, or something that takes you out of your comfort zone like Call of C'thulu, Tony presents a great challenge for new and veteran players alike, while giving you *just* enough slack to make it through at the end of the session. Every session I've played is a new thrill, and the care and detail he puts into his world keep me coming back week after week.

Additional details

How to prepare

Players will need a microphone and good internet connection to connect to fantasy grounds. Webcams are strongly encouraged because I feel that player expressions are important to facilitate game play. If you absolutely do not feel comfortable using a webcam you will not be required too. Characters sheets and dice will be provided in fantasy grounds.

What I provide

I will bring the rule system, character sheets, dice, maps and illustrations within fantasy grounds. I will bring a Safety Tool built into a fantasy grounds extension called HALT! which utilizes a modified X-Card system.

Gameplay details

Call of Cthulhu is a horror game with dark themes and heavy role playing encouraged. A Call of Cthulhu game utilizes role playing the character you've created and is akin to improv acting. I've given the game an 18+ rating because there may be adult themes. If you feel uncomfortable with something please let me know privately and I will address the issue immediately. We will have a Session 0 to discuss comfort levels and safety as well as expectations from the GM and Players. As a Safety Tool I use a modified X-Card system built into a fantasy grounds extension called HALT!. The HALT! extension is a MUST-HAVE for safety tools, that is simple and anonymous. The graphics are a simplified N/O/X type of system that is easy to use for newer players with results in the chat window for all to see. In HALT! there are two buttons, SLOW and STOP. All players can use these buttons at any time anonymously. If a button is pushed an alert is shown to the GM and all players stating either "This scene is getting uncomfortable. Please pause and consider everyone at the table." for SLOW and "This scene has gone to far. Please consider everyone at the table and roll back." for STOP. If a button is pushed we will reevaluate the scene and make adjustments to ensure the game provides safety and comfort for everyone.
