The Hunters Hunted on All Hallows Eve (Dark Ages: Werewolf)

The Hunters Hunted on All Hallows Eve (Dark Ages: Werewolf)

World of Darkness, Werewolf: The Apocalypse 20th Anniversary Edition | Campaign

About the adventure

In the deepest nights of a long Dark Age, where the monsters of myth and legend are real . . . It is the Year of our Lord 1307 and the Kingdom of England stands poised to achieve its long-held ambition to rule the whole of its own island. King Edward the Longshanks, having vanquished and subdued the Welsh lords once and for all, now marches north once more at the head of his armies, to crush the last rebellious claimant to Scotland’s empty throne. After a generation of civil war and upheaval, the long peace within England under Edward’s rule has inspired many lords to expand their holdings, tasking their serfs with clearing away forests for new farmlands, building new towns and villages, churches and manor houses, roads and bridges and ferries, as the wilderness gives way to the march of civilization once more. From the long shadows of the deep, dark forests, the Garou - shapechangers born of men and wolves alike, walkers between worlds of flesh and spirit, and the deadliest hunters of the dark nights of the medieval, whom the peasant superstitions call by the name of 'werewolves' - watch this and wonder what the future holds for them . . . Deep in the Forest of Braden, at the hidden sept of Peacebringer’s Hollow, the Garou mourn the loss of their own. Two moons before, a whole pack of werewolves went to help their allies march to war, but only one survivor returned to tell the tale of the victory won at a bitter cost. A mere fortnight ago, the sept’s greatest warrior was found torn limb from limb at the forest’s edge, as if he was some peasant churl caught out at night by a wild beast and not a mighty Garou who could easily visit that fate on any man or beast to face him. And as the moon wanes and the night darkens, the sept huddles close together . . . but the one who watches the humans nearby, disguised as a traveling monk, has not returned as expected . . . Did the hunters in the shadows claim his life as well? For out there in the darkness, beyond the firelight, the Garou know they are far from alone. There are many other dwellers in shadows besides the werewolves, but they know themselves to be the most dangerous predators to stalk the nights, for none can stand before their Rage when it is provoked. Yet Hunted they are, in their own lands, and the only question that remains is . . . Who Hunts the Hunters? (This game is a Halloween Themed Short Run of Werewolf: The Dark Ages. Experience with the system is not required, the ST will happily teach as we go along. Pregenerated PCs will be provided - all the players need bring is their courage to face the darkness, their Rage in defense of Mother Gaia, and all the D10s they can muster. The ST will provide the Rest.)

Game style

Theater of the Mind

“Theater of the Mind” uses little to no visuals for scene settings and combat. Instead, the narrative imagery comes from the Game Master’s descriptions and character action and movement comes from Players’ descriptions.

Party notes

Players should message the ST, either here or on Discord (renaissnceman) with their email & their Discord Handle. The ST will send a Survey to the Player's email, which is necessary to deploy certain safety tools, and on receipt of the survey response, the ST will evaluate the application & send the Discord Server Invite.

Jim comes prepared, but will match your energy. If you have players that are willing to step up and really engage, he is more than willing to respond in kind. My experience with him at the helm of Legend of the Five Rings 5th edition has been wonderful. Recommended, particularly for lore-rich settings.

He makes a Character's death fun. What more could you ask?

Did a great job of going over the character sheet which can be intimidating for new players to this game and was very aware of the need to do so while keeping in the appropriate timeframe. Excellent teacher of the rules and concepts of Runequest. Enough to whet your appetite and leave you wanting more

My son and I just completed a Runequest one-shot with Jim. We have been wanting to learn the system for some time and Jim made sure we all had a great and positive learning experience. We had ample opportunity to ask questions, both related to the rules and the setting. When we ended a combat, he made certain we had a basic proficiency with what is admittedly a challenging combat system. The endgame was very satisfying and fit extremely well with the feel of Glorantha. I would definitely return for more!

Jim is a fantastic GM who helps newcomers explore the lore of Glorantha in an easy to digest and fun manner, with an emphasis on drama and storytelling. Well worth the price of admission!

Jim is an amazingly meticulous GM in terms of building and weaving together the aspects of your backstory into the current game.

Additional details

How to prepare

I run my games primarily through Discord, so that is likely the medium we will use. A mic is required to participate, and a video camera is strongly encouraged, so I can see my players' smiling faces too. If you happen to have a copy of Dark Ages: Werewolf (2003) and the core book of the Dark Ages line, Dark Ages: Vampire (2002), I would read chapters 1(Darkening World), 2 (The Garou) and 3 (Characters and Drama) in Dark Ages Werewolf, and chapter 7 (Dramatic Systems) of Dark Ages: Vampire. If you do not but you have access to Werewolf: The Apocalypse in any of its previous editions, read the chapters about the Garou themselves and the dramatic systems. And if this is your first experience with the World of Darkness . . . welcome. I will be happy to teach as we go along and I lead you down the path to darkness . . . As mentioned above, there will be no need to create characters as we will be using pregenerated characters, but I encourage you to bring at least ten ten-sided dice (D10s), as you will be using them for every roll in the game. You can use online dice rollers, but I would not think to deprive you of the joy of rolling those beautiful dice for yourself.

What I provide

I am bringing everything I need to plunge you into the darkness of a bygone age. I am a serious medievalist with a lot of knowledge about this specific time and place, and I have run games set in this time period for almost two decades now, but I am not an artist, so I will have to describe your characters, the setting, and the scenery with my words, but if I have time, I might try to set something up with Astral or Roll20 to help move things along.

Gameplay details

I will be sending out a player survey prior to game to help identify which player best suits which Pregenerated Character, and also to find out the Lines and Veils of each player privately. The Lines and Veils will be communicated to the whole group at the beginning of the game, and we will discuss all the safety tools we will be employing. This is the World of Darkness, and awful things tend to happen, sometimes to player characters. Because it is the Dark Ages depicted in a gritty horror motif, real world religion (Catholicism) is part of the scenery - no commentary for or against is intended. And violence against people and animals happens when Hunters are stalking werewolves and their kin, both human and lupine alike. There is a lot of violence in this scenario as written, and a high chance of PC death. Be warned.

How will character creation work

Pregenerated Characters will be provided. I have up to eight Garou Warriors who can challenge the darkness. I will be sending out a required survey to determine which Pregen suits which player's play style the best, and also to gain valuable information about my players' limits. Descriptions of the available pregens will be part of the Survey. If time allows and we get sufficient players before the game begins, we can also go through character creation using the usual processes and build the pack anew from the ground up. In this case, Player Characters will be built to the same standards as the Pregenerated Characters - as Rank 2 Werewolves with some additional bonus points applied, as this scenario is for starting players but not starting Werewolves. I will in this case want to create Garou from each of the five Auspices before we double up on any Auspice. If done this way, Character Creation will be done as a group as part of Session 0.
