The Grim Hollow Criminal Empire game i played in had great roleplay and fellow players. However i found after a while that game had very limited player agency. Our aspiring criminal group was constantly under the thumb of unquantifiable and restrictive forces outside our control(be they magic locks or big bads and pushed away from the freedom to follow criminal ambitions of our own. At least with this unique campaign he was unable to fulfil the fantasy of developing as a criminal. At first glance it seems like choices matter but after the conclusion of the first arc. ( When a heist/ assassination turned into sudden time skip and a profession advancement without us achieving anything meaningful from our in game attempts) was anticlimactic and left me feeling like nothing we did truly mattered. Perhaps it is that he runs too many games atm to deliver a truly great game with a well weaved plot. He is a nice and very clever person but not what i look for in a paid game experience.
If you enjoy having evocative visuals aids and well thought out challenges grounded in realism, I must recommend JS!. His Battle Maps, Music and Storytelling bring a new life to his “Old School” style of DMing. He encourages creative solutions to problems and sets the scene with the information you need to make informed decisions which I really appreciated.
DM Squizard offers an engaging experience for both beginner and veteran players alike. Prepared, patient and thoughtful he brings great energy to the virtual table every session. Capable of engaging NPC discourse, and on the fly thinking that pulls you into the moment without losing a healthy pacing. I completed Dragons of Icespire Peaks under his guidance and had a fantastic experience, sticking around for a campaign 2 with this DM and recommend him highly!
