R0boto0 is a very passionate GM and you can feel the excitement as you play through one of his adventures. He takes the time to customise the foundry experience to makes sure to fix any issues that arise. He does voices, he alters the speed and tone of his voice when describing action. Great GM and i'd recommend playing with him! Unfortunately we are in crazy different timezones and my life commitments just kept clashing with the game time.
The game itself was okay. Hard to judge based off a single session as everyone is still dealing with the awkwardness of being in a new group and finding their way. Game was theatre of mind and run off discord. GM had arranged some fitting music but had issues with the bot playing it halfway through and it stopped. I do wish there were some nice visual aid pictures put into discord though to help build the mood and give a sense of location (but again it was advertised as theatre of mind). I felt a bit lost a few times because it wasn't really clear to me what our surroundings were. My main issue would be the GMs communication. After the game another player messaged me and asked what was happening with the game, as they got notifications the sessions were cancelled, but they were no longer in the games discord server. Upon checking I confirmed. Without any word at all from the GM, the game was cancelled, and booted from the discord server. Now the game was free, but still some common courtesy "hey guys, sorry I can't go ahead with the game but thanks for playing".. that took seconds to write. Would have been nice if he had taken the time. The key thing that makes RPing great is the people, but that requires actually treating them as people.
Save yourself some time, stop reading this review and book SG as your DM. I feel blessed to be part of her Wild Beyond the Witchlight 5e campaign. I've played with over two dozen different DM's, and SG is by far the best I've encountered. Professional, patient, organised, and always bubbly and cheerful. Great system knowledge and clearly knows the adventure she is running very well. She sets the scene with maps, pictures and the mood with beautiful music, but it's her amazing ability to just become a completely different person with each NPC she controls. Not just her outstanding voicework, but each one feels different and filled with personality. We even had an NPC sing to us last session. As a player I'm usually very hard to engage. My attention span is short and I'll be alt tabbed within minutes, or checking my phone, or any number of other distractions. SG is one of the only GMs to hold my attention for full sessions. I'm not even a fan of 5e... but I keep coming back. I don't really like roll20... but I keep coming back. Don't let system or platform get in the way of booking a great DM.
I played in several sessions of Nyx's Vault of Dhurlgrulsia game and it is clear from the outset it is a labour of love. Nyx runs a tight ship with a carefully curated set of maps, music and foundry modules to enhance the experience, entertaining NPC voices and a handcrafted world full of lore to uncover. Nyx was also accomodating in installing a module I usually use in my games, to make my player experience better. Nyx demonstrated solid rules knowledge, and the fights were hard but fair, and it always felt like Nyx was cheering us on even as we took the big hits. If it wasn't for the devil that is scheduling rearing its ugly head I'd have cemented my seat at Nyx's table.
