About me
Creative writing has been a therapeutic hobby of mine for a long time, and Dungeons & Dragons, starting with the Red Box set, has provided a natural home for it. My journey covered Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 1st Edition through AD&D 2E, for which I still have all the books and compendia. Military service, college, and thirty years of a career pulled me away from the table. Now, as I approach the end of that career, I find destiny calling me back. Whether it be fate or the subtle mental persuasions of a mindflayer, my daughter and my high school students expressed interest in playing, separately but nearly simultaneously. It was time to dive back in, beginning with learning D&D 2024 (5.5e). My eventual goal is to start D&D clubs at the middle and high school levels, using the game to encourage reading, creative writing, improvisation, and social navigation. But the real reason I came back is simpler. Time flew during the four hours of my first session, and I left hungry for more. Heavy, immersive roleplaying made it sing. Roleplay during short and long rests added real depth, making the player-characters feel like they were genuinely getting to know each other. Tracking supplies added a layer of realism I loved, especially when material shortages affected gameplay in ways that were not immediately obvious. My ideal table is one where everyone is engaged, actively participating, and surprised by where the story takes them. I currently have accounts on D&D Beyond, Discord, Roll20, and Foundry VTT, obviously (or perhaps not).
