DM Paul might be the best DM I have ever played with; and by like a large margin. I am having the greatest time I have ever had as a player at his table, and I feel like I’m getting a front row seat on how to be a Master Class Dungeon Master. There is a veteran confidence and experience at this table I have never experienced before in all of my history with DND. Like when I first signed up for the campaign, he had a bunch of rules that I felt real iffy about; they seemed a little strict and something I’d never run in my games. But I quickly found out that all of them are in service of keeping a weekly game running smoother and more consistent than any other game of DND I have ever seen. I did not know you could run a game of DND this well. We have three hour sessions that both somehow go by in a blink and yet barrel through huge sections of gameplay that would normally take weeks at any other table. Everyone gets a chance in the spotlight, no one feels left out. Things just keep moving. It’s honestly amazing to watch DM Paul at work, but it’s even more fun to play. Also, we’re using a Foundry, a system that I emphatically do not like! Yet DM Paul has made it a breeze rather than the tedious chore it is under almost anyone else. I hate Foundry and the constant tinkering that stops gameplay dead in its tracks for ten minutes at a time. But in DM Paul’s games I don’t think we’ve had an issue that wasn’t resolved within ten to fifteen seconds, and I’m only vague on those numbers because they happen so infrequently that it’s hard to gauge. DM Paul is criminally undercharging for his talents. He is running the tough but fair kind of challenge I have been looking for my whole TTRPG life. I genuinely feel I’m learning how to play DND better at his table. He truly is one of the best DMs I have ever played with and he is giving me the chance to enjoy this game more than I thought I already could. Do yourself a favor and play at his table. You will not regret it. …Also, I have nowhere to add this than to cram it in the end of my review, but you know the three and a half paragraph backstory that you always write for every campaign even though you know the DM will never read it? He took it and expanded it into a four page document that read into and unpacked everything I hinted at in those three and a half paragraphs in a way that made me feel so seen as a player that it legitimately made me cry. Dude made me cry before Session 0.
