There's good DM's, great DM's and then there's (very rarely) great storytellers that are also great DM's. Storytelling is a rare talent that allows a story that's developed with the players to roll out visually, cinematically, and is if the characters are part of a great novel. I've been playing since 1979 and I've never met a better DM and storyteller than this GM.
Ultimately the game is about telling stories. A good DM guides his players through a good story, but a GREAT DM lets his players guide the story, and he simple builds on it. This is what Austin does. From the moment you start you are certain of one thing -- he's running this game for you and the other players and he does in masterfully.
The mark of a great DM isn't simply knowing the rules, or having all the tools money can buy. The real mark is when they are a gifted storyteller that draws you in, and doesn't let you go until they leave you wanting more next week. Derek is an exciting DM -- and I have played with hundreds, and would only say that about a handful.
There are a lot of good DM's, but very, very few great storytellers and Red is a born storyteller. Give him a little to work with in the game and he will visually unroll and make you a part of the world. I just played my first game with him, and I have already signed up for another full campaign.
