Hunter DMed a bespoke one-shot for me and a group of my friends and I honestly don't think the experience could have been better. The adventure took some INCREDIBLY wacky turns and Hunter didn't just go with them—he threw himself into them in a way that somehow made us more creative, which in turn made things wackier, which in turn made Hunter throw himself even more into things, which in turn… …all while keeping complete and perfect control of all the game mechanics and perfectly balancing role play, combat, etc. If you have a chance to play with Hunter you MUST take it. I promise you won't regret it.
I would recommend Dabinski to ANYONE, but I can only speak about my own experience, so here goes. At his table I as a queer person and as a neurodivergent person feel completely safe, nurtured, and encouraged not just to be creative but also to GROW creatively, while never losing a sense of play. We have players from at least three continents, and yet somehow, with his awareness of and sensitivity to cultural differences, he makes me feel like we're all in EXACTLY the same place. I've never seen anybody better at helping groups overcome hurdles in a really subtle, sensitive, empathetic way.that makes EVERYBODY feel heard. I want to say particularly that his patience with me as a beginner has been astonishing. He's given me the help and continues to give me I need to keep up, somehow without making it obvious or making me feel called out in any way. All this on top of the fact that his character voices are AWESOME. I've played with a LOT of GMs on startplaying.com, and very few of them have been as good as Dabinski. If you have the opportunity to play in one of his games, you should ABSOLUTELY seize it. There aren't many like him.
Brann was amazing—from the very beginning it was clear I was in safe and experienced hands—terrific narration, taking advantage of split-second opportunities to widen the story and make it more meaningful and more emotionally true. At one point one of us died—like, dead, dead, no more death saving throws—and it was such a deeply moving moment. Would definitely play with Brann again, in a heartbeat.
Jacob was wonderful—we had a group of players with very different styles of play and somehow he made the game work for all of us at the same time! Edit: I played another one-shot with Jaycob today, and he took some super-over-the-top stuff we threw at him and absolutely ran with it to places that both broke my heart AND made me laugh my ass off.
