About Matt

I began playing D&D 5e in early 2022 by GMing the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle starter set for my kids, who were 8, 12, and 14 at the time. I was immediately hooked and started running two other games for friends of mine who were brand new to D&D. I brought one group through the Lost Mines of Phandelver before launching them into a new campaign in the Spelljammer Adventures in Space module, and I'm nearing the four-year anniversary of a Phandelver and Below campaign. I'm also a player in an online game using the Critical Role Call of the Netherdeep setting, and my Spelljammer campaign is a mix of in-person and online sessions. I have experience as both a player and a GM with AboveVTT and Discord, and I love to put the VTT to use with great maps and digital tokens!

How Matt runs games

My favorite version of D&D is one where players have a backstory connected to the larger world so we can build the story together. I love to sprinkle breadcrumbs over a few sessions that can lead to a backstory tie-in. I try to use combat as a tool to further the narrative while also being mechanically interesting and a level-appropriate challenge. I lean towards RAW but am happy to ask for things like an arcana or spellcasting check if a player wants to do something slightly out of the bounds of a spell's written use case. I prefer D&D 5.5 but started in 5e (2014). I love bringing unique NPCs to life with memorable voices and mannerisms that my players won't soon forget!

I prep by

Finding great maps and character art to help my players immerse themselves in the world of our story. I love to use music to set the mood and heighten tension. I'm always looking back at character backstories to see if and when we can tie them into the larger story.

Rules are...

A framework for creativity. If you have an interesting idea for how your character can put a skill, tool, or spell to work, we'll figure out how to make it happen!

When it comes to voices

I love finding the right dialect and inflection for notable NPCs.

Matt's ideal table

My ideal table is a group of players who know who they are in the world of the story. Where is your character from? What relationships do they bring with them to the story? What skills and abilities do they already possess, and what are they hoping to learn? I've primarily run games for people who are brand new to D&D, so I'm happy to teach and train as we go, but I'm looking for players who are excited to learn!

I think min/maxing...

Can be fun if the party is looking for a challenge!

My perfect party mix is

Players who are invested in the world we are creating. I will always try to make space for everyone to shine using whichever class they choose to play!
