About Cy

Well met! Since I could pick up a pencil, I’ve been a huge fan of telling stories. Creating characters, breathing life into them, all of that is so much fun. Introduction to Baldur’s Gate 3 led me to falling in love with the Forgotten Realms, and I’ve been having a swell time creating stories there now. I enjoy inhabiting the world and giving players a backdrop to portray their own stories. While my experience so far has been with Dungeons and Dragons 5E 2024 and Old School Essentials, I’ve enjoyed my time playing and DMing both systems and have fallen in love with the gameplay.

I became a GM because

My first TTRPG experience was with a DM who broke our session 0 agreements and who refused to correct a player who crossed boundaries we had communally agreed were forbidden. I almost immediately became a DM so I could give friends a fun experience that was also respectful of them as people.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

Creatively evil bastard? It's not three words necessarily, but I've heard "Cy, when I get you" a number of times when coming up with diabolical plans :)

When I'm not running games I'm...

Probably playing them! I love bouncing between the DM’s seat and a player’s seat. I also love Baldur’s Gate 3, reading materials from Forgotten Realms, etc

How Cy runs games

I adore immerse gameplay and characters that want to inhabit the setting they’re in, especially ones made to fit with the setting. I enjoy a setting that’s lived-in (especially for Forgotten Realms) and prefer DMing for players who want to be creative with their abilities and diplomatic with their encounters. There will always be plenty of combat—I’m about 50/50 tactical combat and immersive roleplay—but plenty of encounters can open up interesting story variants if approached uniquely.

I deal with rules issues by...

I’m pretty quick at looking them up :) I have the PHB and DMG in another tab when playing. Feel free to remind me if something doesn’t sound right and we can look at it together and confirm.

I once ran a session...

...that included elements of an escape room. It was in-person, but a lot of fun seeing people discover the things around them are connected to other clues!

Rules are...

...an important scaffolding for the game. Rules give us an idea of what's possible and what neat stuff we can do within the boundaries of the rules. I like looking at them as a puzzle to solve.

Cy's ideal table

I love folks who are interested in and curious about Forgotten Realms lore. I also love players who try to redeem villains, are creative in their gameplay, and avoid the horrors of “murderhoboing” 😂

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Baldur's Gate 3. That was my first introduction to the Forgotten Realms, so all of my knowledge has its starting point there and expanded into the AD&D and other edition sourcebooks. But Baldur's Gate 3 is still my first love when it comes to Toril content!

I love it when a player

Searches for new diplomatic ways to turn a scene. Instead of raiding a beholder’s lair, why not try allying with it against a greater enemy? I like characters that have a certain affinity or affection for usually-hated beings like aberrations and monstrosities.

I think metagaming...

Doesn’t really bother me. I’m not a stickler for avoiding terminology like hit points or utilizing your game knowledge and player skill to succeed. It’s a lot like the OSR stuff I started with. You can see the enemies’ hit point bars to track your progress and strategize.
