About Hans

Hi, I'm Hans! I'm a fantasy/sci-fi author, voice & stage actor, and game enthusiast. I've done freelance work for Rite Publishing and AAW Games, and served as the ENnie Awards Submission Coordinator from 2009-2019, and an ENnie Awards Judge for the 2025-2026 season. I've been playing tabletop games since 1982, starting with the Moldvay-revision Basic set of Dungeons & Dragons. Since then I've play and run more games than I can count. While D&D is my first love, I consider WEG's Star Wars d6 (2nd edition) my all-time favorite game and I've recently really been enjoying delving into Daggerheart.

My favorite shows/movies are

Star Trek (pretty much all of it, except the Abrams-verse) Doctor Who (see above) Star Wars (the OT, Rebels... if Feloni/Favreau are involved great, JJ Abrams, not so much) Indiana Jones The Lord of the Rings Avatar: The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra

My favorite system of all Time is

West End Games's now out-of-print Star Wars, 2nd Edition (aka d6 Star Wars).

When I'm not running games I'm...

Writing fiction, painting miniatures, playing video games, acting, doing voice over work, reading, cooking, and sadly, also adulting.

How Hans runs games

I enjoy running games with quirky NPCs, interesting locales to explore, and an emphasis on offering multiple ways to deal with situations. I like to include a variety of environments and situations and I am not averse to letting things get silly once in a while. I tend not to go for Extremely Serious™ or R-rated horror.

I once ran a session...

... where the PCs went to a shop to fish for information, and ended up role-playing an extended shopping trip revolving around a completely fictional wedding they were "attending" and ended up buying a silk wedding dress for a wookiee. I don't know if she ever wore the dress.

Rules are...

... useful right up until they get in the way of having fun. Some systems can't get out of their own way and I'm not interested in perfectly simulating life.

When it comes to voices

I will occasionally adopt specific voices for certain important characters, but in my experience, this can be hit or miss when playing virtually due to microphone/noise reduction issues and sound quality. It's more important to be clear and understood.

Hans's ideal table

Players who come for the story and to explore the world and characters will do well. If you just want to kick down doors, kill things, and take their stuff, it's a legit playstyle, but it's just not the kind of game I run these days. I like to keep things easy-going and fun. One shots tend to be kind of beer & pretzel games, campaigns are a little more serious, but with plenty of room for fun and shenanigans.

I love it when a player

Comes up with a background that not only hits the exact vibe of the game, but is full of clever and entertaining nuggets that add to the world.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Make lone wolf character whose background gives no good reason why they would be hanging out with the rest of the party.

My table is not the place for...

PvP (with the sole exception of Paranoia), players who insist on being the sole spotlight to the exclusion of everyone else, murderhobo-ing.
