About Tiefling

I'm 32, a trans woman, a DJ, and DM. 8 years experience, 3 campaigns, too many one shots to count! I specialize in atmosphere. I like deep immersive roleplaying, where we let the world really soak in. I love reading your long backstories and interweaving my setting with them. My goal in DMing is prompting you to understand your PCs motivations and to make changes in the world. Inevitably we will have some fun or goofy moments as we play, but what I really put a ton of effort into is a living breathing that draws you into your role. I also focus on comraderie! I'll try to shine the spotlight on everyone, introduce everyone, and bring to light our shared interests. I also find that most of the time everyone's character has a little bit of themselves in it, and when the world presents opportunities for characters to talk to each other, learn more about each other, or bond, it always kind of reflects a little bit into the real relationships at the table. Toyed with all kinds of systems and like many keep coming back to D&D-like systems. I'm mostly rules are written but I make up rulings, for both mundane and magical improvisation on top of rules as written. I will often be running conversions of old adventure paths and modules. Some of my favorites are paizo dungeon magazine modules or far out TSR settings like planescape or dark sun. Open to running just about anything including modern stuff, just ask, especially if it's "weird", "pulpey", or "atmospheric"! Let's quest!

I became a GM because

I love exploring other worlds with my friends, it's something that I've done since I was a kid playing pretend in the woods, very near and dear to my heart. I like TTRPGs because they give the worlds stakes and ground them and give them structure and weight and texture.

My favorite books are

Love haruki murakami, loved autobiography of red by anne carson recently. As far as high fantasy, I read earthsea recently and it's probably my favorite of all time. Some formative childhood favorites: Eragon, richard a knaak warcraft

When I'm not running games I'm...

DJing, making music on bitwig or synths, recently learning piano, hiking, chilling!

How Tiefling runs games

I aspire to earthsea and name of the wind influences in my worlds. I try to evoke pastoral beauty and grounding everyday life, sensory details, the beauty of the mundane at the core of my atmosphere. I work in some solid pulp fantasy and fairytale toppings the likes of dark sun or conan and early d&d, rare dustings of berserk style otherworldly horror, and occasional zests of haruki murakami or david lynch existential mysticism but using a pretty traditional fantasy paintbrush. (Been told that a description of an angel of death I had appear in a dungeon "felt like donnie darko".) Most of the time my worlds are rather mundane and chill with a good amount of upbeat and funny moments with characters, beauty of nature and of life, as well as the mundane but serious human themes that life entails. When magic comes up I like for it to feel a somewhat surreal, to give it weight. All of this is to say that I focus a lot on the tone of the environment, the world, and the characters living in it. You can expect exploration, intrigue, and tons of roleplay. I weave tactical encounters smoothly into the rest of the roleplaying and often they have alternative objectives besides just wipe out the opposing team. A core part of my games is that we will play on a video chat service with cameras ideally on! Gestures, expressions, voice, and presence are crucial to what I see ultimately as an improv game. Owlbear Rodeo or live video physical map streams only when necessary.

Tiefling's ideal table

My ideal table is, to start off, full of kind and creatively generous people. If there's one thing that makes me proud it's watching a player give another player an "easy catch" or set them up for a cool improv moment. Whether that's your character asking about the other character's past around the campfire, deferring to another character's expertise when it comes to a challenge, or your character remembering some kind of detail about the other character and creating some kind of moment out of it. In my mind more than anything else this is the most powerful tool for immersion. Nothing makes your character feel more real than other character's understanding who they are and reacting to them like real people. So yeah, that's all to say, my ideal table really likes to get into the world feel immersed. Folks who want to feel like a clever wizard or a daring fighter or a wise druid, and to make some friends along the way.
