About Gareth

Hail and well-met, traveller. Welcome to the Tavern of the WildCard. Relax, look around, and prepare for adventure, glory, renown and treasures beyond imagining! I'm Gareth, a Welsh exile in Yorkshire. My love of fantasy brought me to the good old red Basic book back in the 80s, graduating to Expert and then Advanced (yes, I thought that was the progression). Call of Cthulhu, MERP, Shadowrun, Traveller, Runequest - all played (and still play) a part in my development. Life got in the way after uni, but I found my way back to the true path during lockdown and haven't looked back. I've DM'd a ton of one-shots/short adventures, and an expansive level 1-15 campaign. I want to bring the joy of D&D to as many adventurers as I can, from grizzled veterans to fresh-faced newcomers. While I acknowledge and respect the lovely rules, I am always going to advocate for the rule of cool. And I will never let this become a game of me versus you - the only winners are going to be the players and characters (if the dice so ordain!)

My favorite books are

The entire Magician saga by Raymond E Feist (who I have met) Everything by Terry Pratchett (who I met and I miss) The inaccurately named Hitchhikers Guide trilogy (never met Douglas Adams but wish I had)

My favorite shows/movies are

Firefly, of course The Princess Bride (if you know, you know) Buffy/Angel Currently enjoying a rewatch of Brooklyn 99 and Battlestar Galactica

When I'm not running games I'm...

playing in RPG. Or working. But mostly playing. Sleeping too, I guess. But yeah, RPGs

How Gareth runs games

I try to balance RP and combat, and will always tailor that to the tastes of your table. I will throw everything at the game to make sure it's memorable and fun, from immersive soundscapes to silly voices. In a campaign I will try to make every player feel like their character has value and importance to the story. In a One-shot I will make every encounter a cinematic and (where appropriate) perilous experience. And in both cases, I aim for a collaborative experience - the players are, after all, the storytellers here, I just correct the punctuation.

I am for a vibe that's...

joyful even in despair, relaxed, collaborative, fun

I love it when a player

doesn't see it coming, and still talks about it at the next session

I think metagaming...

is unfair on other players. You may be privy to that information, but is your character? Also, it's very easy to spot so ... just please don't.
