About Derek “The Geekpreacher”

I’m Rev. Derek W. White, also known as “The Geekpreacher,” a Game Master, writer, and co-creator of the DarkSpace TTRPG. I’ve spent years running games at conventions and in community settings, blending storytelling, exploration, and player-driven narratives. My background in ministry and community-building shapes how I approach the table. I create spaces where players can engage the story at their own level, take meaningful risks, and build memorable moments together. I care about moments that stick with you. The kind you talk about after the game ends.

I got started GMing...

I got started GMing in the early 1980s, running D&D for my classmates during recess. I learned how to run quick, fun encounters, and, over the years, I've realized that lifelong friendships are often formed around the table.

My favorite books are

My favorite books include Dune, The Ship Who Sang, The Hobbit, and The Chronicles of Prydain. I’m especially drawn to science fiction that uses big ideas to explore what it means to be human.

How Derek “The Geekpreacher” runs games

I run player-driven games where your choices shape the story. I focus on creating meaningful moments, not just encounters, with a strong emphasis on exploration, tension, and consequence. The world reacts to you. Success feels earned, and survival is never guaranteed. I keep rules light and moving so the story never stalls, while still honoring the danger of the setting. Expect immersive environments, tough decisions, and moments where your character’s motivations truly matter.

My games focus on...

My games focus on meaningful choices, real risk, and player-driven stories. I create space for both tension and connection, where the decisions you make shape the world and the moments you remember.

Derek “The Geekpreacher”'s ideal table

My table is collaborative, story-driven, and welcoming to a wide range of play styles. I run games where player choice matters, and where the story is shaped by what you decide to do in the moment. The vibe is a balance of tension and connection. You’ll face real risks and meaningful decisions, but there’s also room for humor, creativity, and those quieter character moments that bring the story to life. Players who enjoy exploration, teamwork, and engaging with the world will feel right at home. You don’t need to be an expert roleplayer, just someone willing to show up, participate, and respect the shared space. Whether you’re here for the action, the story, or the community, there’s a place for you at the table.

I love it when a player

I love it when a player throws a curveball. Creative, unexpected choices are often what turn a good session into a memorable one. I run games that can adapt in the moment, so when you take a risk or try something different, the story grows from it rather than shutting it down.
