About Spencer

I'm a current law student, lifelong storyteller, and eight year TTRPG veteran. Mostly experienced in Monster of the Week, I grew up on stories of original Dungeons & Dragons.

My favorite shows/movies are

I love ensemble cast episodic shows like Psych, Leverage, and Deep Space 9, and monster of the week paranormal works like the Buffyverse, Warehouse 13, and Supernatural. My favorite movies are all terrible B-movies and critically acclaimed classic crime movies.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

What the critics are saying: "short, i don't need other words" and "mean little freak", but a guy in a trench coat and stilts who looks suspiciously like me said "critically acclaimed; triumphant"

When I'm not running games I'm...

fighting for my life with law school readings, listening to weird nonfiction podcasts, writing with my spouse, and running after my dog.

How Spencer runs games

I bring you mysteries rooted in urban legends, regional folklore, and classic horror creature features in settings with a sense of place and history. I try to combine a safe, inclusive space with thrills and chills, genre fun, and whodunnits. I have a "bring your own protagonist" sandbox approach with no right or wrong answers, and root for your characters as they forge their own way.

I once ran a session...

with a time loop that was actually timed with a timer so I knew when the reset would be!

My favorite trope is...

when characters give wildly conflicting accounts of events, especially in separate police interrogation rooms.

Rules are...

tools to support the narrative and to keep things fair.

Spencer's ideal table

Characters welcome! I love an ensemble cast with character and narrative focus. Open to experienced roleplayers and newcomers eager to flesh out their characters for the first time.

I love it when a player

lets their character fail! A lot of character growth, narrative meat, and both comedy and badassery come at the bottom of the ninth when the gang has screwed up more times than they can count. Shoot yourself in the foot! Literally!

I think metagaming...

has a (limited) time and place. Don't metagame to avoid failing! But if something purely in character might work against the players' interests or the narrative, it's sometimes helpful to talk as a group to decide on a reason why it wouldn't happen.

My perfect party mix is

an ensemble of weirdos, especially if each weirdo thinks they're the only sane one there!
