About me

I've been playing games for over 39 years, primarily Dungeons and Dragons and World of Darkness, with many others along the way. I love introducing new players to role-playing, and I know how to keep things interesting for veteran players too. I love a mutually enjoyable shared storytelling experience, in which the players are the heroes of the story. I like the structure and consistency of the rules, but never let them get in the way, and I love bringing characters and encounters to life. All of my game sessions are LGBTQIA+, BIMPOC, neurodivergent, disability, & new player-friendly safe spaces. I currently reside in Wellington, New Zealand, in the middle of Middle Earth, and can host in-person if you are in Wellington too.

GM Style

Good role playing, exciting combat and situations, the occasional twist or surprise, and memorable moments, villains and heroes. The rules serve the story, not the other way around, but the rules do help things stay predictable and a bit grounded. Expect challenging but winnable combat, interesting and diverse NPCs, and player characters at the center of the narrative. I prefer to keep sessions friendly and fun. Good role-playing comes from good character development, so I like to help players craft interesting character backstories and personalities that will complement the adventure and the party. I can help you craft a strong backstory and you can be sure it will impact the adventure. I strive to create evocative scenes and NPCs and have a wide range of voices and personalities I have shaped over the years. That means a good session zero and some offline planning are essential in my campaigns. I value involvement from all players and strive to ensure everyone has a great time. I love the social aspects of D&D and will always take time to get to know everyone, I like ongoing gaming groups but am equally happy to run the occasional one-shot. I run published adventures from WoTC and third parties, but with the freedom to explore and 'leave the map' when the party wants to. I grew up playing as an improvisational DM before settling into the structure of pre-written adventures. I can run homebrew campaigns and have a few house rules I'm fond of, but I mainly like to stick to the official sources. I can run in-person sessions in Wellington, New Zealand, with a large, comfortable games room and a vast miniatures collection. I usually 3d print and paint miniatures for in-person campaigns.
