About Susannah Murphine

I have two big passions: storytelling and doing funny voices. Playing D&D is the best way I've found to marry those two passions. I've been running games for friends for a few years now, and I want to share my love of D&D with as many people as I can!

I became a GM because

I loved telling stories with my friends, and now I get to tell stories with people who become friends after the fact!

People are always surprised when I tell them

that I was homeschooled for the majority of my elementary - high school years...and then they aren't surprised anymore because I make more sense, ha ha!

When I'm not running games I'm...

teaching college freshmen how to write well...or at least as well as I can in a 101 classroom. During the summer, I'm more likely tutoring folks taking their SAT and ACT!

How Susannah Murphine runs games

I am a very character-focused GM. I tend to prioritize telling the characters' stories over pitting them against monsters. There may be a few sessions where the only monsters your characters face are the ones within.

I deal with rules issues by...

frantically searching through my books to find the rules I'd forgotten, then defaulting to the book to stay as neutral as possible.

Rules are...

a framework to make sure everyone gets to have fun, but aren't my absolute highest priority.

When it comes to voices

I can do pretty much anything but remember that voice I gave to NPC #42 a few sessions back...but he was probably Irish, so I'll go with that! Voices are a favorite thing of mine, and a skill I've honed through DMing and acting, but my memory is unfortunately that of a goldfish made of swiss cheese.

I think min/maxing...

is fine so long as it doesn't get in the way of the story. If you can justify why your character has the build they do within the world we're building together, and if you can portray them within that world, do as you will. If not, then we may need to talk about your character building strategy.

My perfect party mix is

Equal parts martial (fighting with weapons) and caster (fighting with magic) classes, where possible. Sometimes, to better achieve that balance, I will introduce NPCs to fill the needed hole.
