About Chris

Born and raised on the central East Coast of America. I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons on/off for the last four years, have ran a couple one-shots, but have enjoyed the scarier aspects of TTRPGs. Mainly the cosmic horror elements of Call of Cthulhu, and any media that emulate that level of dreadful despair. My first taste for it was The Last Apprentice book series when I was a child and it only grew from there. Later on it was comics, movies and even some songs that continue to inspire me in developing more intense worlds to be a part of or further develop.

I became a GM because

I found the personal need for them amongst my friend groups. I always loved telling stories, or being a part of one, yet I'd struggle to meet people willing to be the head of the table. To have that pressure on them to produce an enjoyable environment. I love the creative expression of the position.

My favorite books are

I grew up loving The Last Apprentice as I came up through public education. Later, it developed into The Hobbit. Eventually, I pushed away from fantasy and started to get heavily into books based on psychology and diving into The Grimm Brothers, Lovecraft and Poe.

How Chris runs games

I am a fan of roleplay, but I fail at creating interesting voices. I attempt to emphasize on the boundaries of what the players accept as appropriate, then continuing to build upon their character interests or backstories to consistently keep them within the limits of the atmosphere that we're currently involved in. I prefer setting up difficulty opportunities, that only increase over time, to force the player to think, even though they're typically stuck on the realistic capabilities of their characters, and have a chance at overcoming the odds. Where I think a lot of personal interest comes from is the realization that we're not all immortal. Our plans do go south and sometimes our consequences lack the identity of a do-over. There are no second chances when your lives are constantly on the line. When your party or best friend has found themselves in a critical status, and it's up to you and who's ever around you to make that difference continuing on with or, sadly, without them. It's a brutal world when faced with the cosmic horrors of this universe, and anything could happen. I want the players to have a good time knowing every moment could be the last opportunity they have to make a difference. Additionally, I hope to get into Twilight 2000, Cyberpunk RED, W40K Only War (and it's sister books) and anything of that level of involvement. I do have Old Gods of Appalachia listed, but I am still learning the program currently, though I do plan to run it in the future.

I deal with rules issues by...

Attempting to correct the behavior. If the behavior isn't corrected or needs a longer conversation, then the player may have to be removed or asked to take a breath while the scenes continue. I don't mind individuals taking a second to realize where they are, but I will not risk the table's health.

Rules are...

Systematically, everyone has rules. First and foremost, everyone remains comfortable with each situation. There will be no sexual/AO like content that's provided nor accepted. You will be expected to treat the table with respect, to the highest degree. Leave your differences at the door.

When it comes to voices

They're not my strongest suite. It's something I attempt, but get mentally blocked on. I'm fine with players doing them, but don't expect me to settle in with it. Maybe one day I'll be good at it, but, for now, it's all about the attitude, wording and intent.

Chris's ideal table

I'd like to refer my table to right after a family dinner, where I was raised to hang out, talk about life and get things off my brain about the day. The space to decompress from the trials and tribulations of ongoing events of my life. No rush to get up and no rush to fill the void of silence. Sometimes, existing next to each other is a strong enough presence to continue forward. We all need moments of calm amongst the calamity. Though, with some added spice, we'll be adventuring together through the trials and tribulations of our characters and stories. Take the plunge, you'll never know the risk until you act upon it. Some will pay off, other will be life lessons. We're all looking for entertainment together, so lets have a good time with the opportunity, the privilege to struggle along.

I love it when a player

takes the initiative of the moment, but leaves space for others to participate by including them directly in conversation or decision making. Take a moment out of character to bring out the personality in each other. Have a bonding moment.

I think it's a red flag when players...

Deliberately look to make others uncomfortable by disrespectfully judging others. Not everyone may be at the same place as you when it comes to knowledge of lore, playing the game or experience. We all operate at a different pace; so have patience and keep a positive attitude.
