About Vergil

My focus is in roleplaying and story, building a world and a narrative that the players can get involved in and shape effectively, whilst getting connected to the world as a whole and their place within it. I utilise a number of safety tools to ensure that players are all having fun and staying safe, and I have no issue with taking a problem player aside...or asking them to leave the table, if absolutely necessary. I'm already reasonably established in the TTRPG space as "Quill Of Damocles," a mapmaker on Twitter, Bluesky, R20 and DTRPG. My number one priority is ensuring that everybody at the table feels safe, and is entertained and engaged by the stories we are telling. I take that responsibility extremely seriously. I have been playing and running Pathfinder 1e for almost a decade now, and running and playing Pathfinder 2e for about three years. I have run a mixture of modules, homebrew campaigns within Golarion, and wholly homebrew worlds of my own devising several times, and am comfortable running for larger or smaller tables.

I became a GM because

To be perfectly honest, I was bullied into it! It's a long story, but my 1st campaign was run because I was pressured into it & was, of course, an utter trainwreck. But I'm grateful; I fell in love with DMing despite it all, and learned more from that one massive failure than any other game!

My favorite system of all Time is

Pathfinder 1e. I run and play more Pathfinder 2e because it's better balanced, it's easier to run and play, and it's a more tightly designed system. That being said...my 1st experience was PF1e, and I will always love the janky interactions and absurd builds I can pull off with it.

The three words my players would use to describe me are...

The three words that come up the most are "detailed," "flexible" and "roleplayer." Detailed because I love building deep lore and expansive worlds and stories that all intersect together, flexible because I am very good at improvising, and roleplayer because, well, I LOVE roleplaying.

How Vergil runs games

I like to think that I do a little bit of everything; I love storytelling, roleplay and narrative stakes, and am a passionate worldbuilder and writer. I don't run dungeon-crawls or combat gauntlets all that much, and prefer to have some narrative and RP bite to my games. But that isn't to say I don't run combat; I enjoy running combat that pushes the players to explore their classes and the environment for an edge, and whilst I wouldn't describe my combat as "lethal" or "Dark Souls," I do enjoy putting players in positions where they have to work as a team to prevail. Beyond that, I also do love my puzzles, and try to find ways to challenge the players in new ways with puzzles, riddles and more; where possible, I try to include visual props and interactable items, though VTT capabilities can sometimes limit what I can do. But first and foremost, I'm there to make sure everybody has fun. That's the name of the game; I want to see my players triumph, and I want to facilitate telling a story that everybody walks away from satisfied and happy. If I can do that, then I think I've succeeded as a GM.

I deal with rules issues by...

Listening to the objection, first and foremost. If it's a simple matter or a quick correction, we can discuss it right there. If it's a more in depth disagreement, then I will make a ruling in the moment, and revisit it after the session after I've had a chance to look into it more deeply.

My games focus on...

Story and roleplay. Combat comes up a lot, of course, but I want the players to have a feeling of WHY they're fighting & who they're fighting for. Roleplay & immersion in the world is more important to me than combat grinds; I want my players to feel invested in more than just the little numbers.

Rules are...

There for a reason. If you want to play a rules-lite system, then play a rules-lite system. I rarely deviate from the RAW rules, but I have been known to houserule or impose my own interpretations if it fits the table. Rules are rules, but you should never feel beholden to sacrifice fun for them.

Vergil's ideal table

Whilst my games can touch on serious issues, and definitely follow serious plotlines with serious stakes, it is not a grimdark or cut-throat table. Moments of levity above table and in character are encouraged, and I actively thrive off of a little bit of chaos. I like to say it's a bit of a Dramedy; there are real people, real stakes, real issues...but we have fun, we can be a bit silly, and there will be silly moments or silly comedic quests to break up the severity if the players want. My ideal table is a group that can go from silly to serious to back again, who can have a laugh and a joke at one player's escapades and then be on the edge of their seat with another player's dramatic backstory scene. And most of all, my ideal table is an accepting group of people who become friends and can have a safe, fun time and don't worry too much about whether the campaign is too gritty or too light hearted.

I love it when a player

takes agency and injects a bit of chaos in the mix. I don't mean chaos as in "weird for weird's sake" or inter-party conflict. I more mean, something I didn't expect, a goal that I didn't see coming or a novel approach to the problem. I want the players to surprise and impress me!

I think it's a red flag when players...

focus too hard on how THEY want a scene to go, without considering the other players. Sometimes other people want to go a different way & that's ok. However, another red flag is when players try to step on another player's moment or scene to try & force it in a direction THEY want. Play nice, guys!

My table is not the place for...

people who always want it their way, or who get upset when things don't go to plan. A plan going off without a hitch is great, but sometimes that just doesn't happen. My table is also not a place for intolerence; be bigoted and you're gone, simple as that.
