About Channing

I have been GMing on and off (mostly on) since around 2011... I actually don't remember exactly. I am a player less frequently, preferring the chair behind the screen. I GM both virtually and in-person, going all out on props, handouts and the like for my in person games. My games are all run in a persistent world, the Opensource Gaming and Roleplaying Environement (OGRE), a westmarches style campaign setting where anyone can join and build shared lore and history together. OGRE's lore wiki can be found below: https://www.worldanvil.com/w/open-source-gaming-and-roleplaying-environment-wobbix

I started running games because...

In middle school, I learned about D&D, and thought it would be a good way to make friends. I picked up 2 different editions of rulebooks, and, not knowing the difference, tried to run them together. It taught me a lot about how not to run a game, but I had fun and have been GMing ever since!

When I'm not running games I'm...

Building and writing lore for the world. It is my dream to eventually publish content from OGRE, and the adventures my players have gotten up to in the form of published modules and setting supplements. When I'm not doing any D&D stuff, I'm usually playing videogames, or woodworking.

How Channing runs games

I go all in on world lore and comprehensive storylines. My sessions are RP heavy, and actions have clear consequences that echo through the world for sessions after. Following RP closely is my focus on combat. While not all my sessions have combat (group dependent, obviously), the ~50% of sessions that do tend to be some of my players' favorites. I create scenarios with in depth tactical options for both players and enemies, often with secondary objectives and motivations. I love rewarding creativity, and feel it is more important to say yes where possible, rather than no, even if it results in a little chaos! I frequently ask my players for feedback, as I am always trying to improve, and to tailor my style to my group.

I prep by

Every session, I write up some more lore. I then figure out what a party is most likely to engage with out of the various threads and activities in front of them, and (over)prepare enough content for them to engage with in several different directions. I try to anticipate their moves, and get ahead.

Rules are...

An aid to the game. While they should be followed where it makes sense to, "Rule of cool" certainly applies. If the rules need to be bent to facilitate an excellent session, then bent they shall be. That said, the rules are a great starting point, and provide a lot of functionality

When it comes to voices

I'm sorry, I don't do voices. At best, I do inflections. I simply feel silly, and I've tried, I'm not good at it.

Channing's ideal table

My tables are typically boisterous, and deeply involved with the plot. I run a sandbox world, where players can engage with any part that seems interesting and shiny. In campaigns, there will usually be an existential plot or crisis introduced for the players to follow, and hopefully thwart. While players play in the sandbox, other actors (including other parties) continue to update the state of the universe, for better or worse.

in depth world lore, and challenging combat

I think min/maxing...

Is a perfectly valid way to play the game. Balance is my job as a GM. If a player's optimized character means I need to adjust tactics in combat, it's my job to figure out how to provide the challenge that player desires, while not leaving others out to die.

My perfect party mix is

composed of some new players and a few experienced players. I'm not one for class balance; 5e edition doesn't require dedicated supports. If I had a party who all wanted to play wizards, and were okay with potentially stepping on each other's toes, I'd think it was a good bit, and get ready to play.
