About Quentin Overturf

I've been dm'ing for 15 years, and have been obsessed with TTRPG's since the beginning! I love dungeon crawling, exploration, and fast paced tactical combat! I'm familiar with a variety of systems, and love incorporating concepts across different games. Genre wise I'm really into horror, and infuse those elements into my games. Recently I've been doing a ton of work in 5th edition dungeons and dragons, and have been brainstorming ideas for Living World/West Marches style games. With that I've cleaned a few modules up and started publishing on DM's Guild! I've spent the past year test running some store games and had some great sessions along the way. I make it a goal that every player gets to contribute to the game and can end a gaming session feeling like progress is made.

How Quentin Overturf runs games

I focus heavily on exploration and combat, and stylistically I put a lot of horror influence into my games. The games I'm most satisfied with are ones where the mechanics and the narrative harmonize, and so I'll often tweak systems to accommodate a particular genre. As a dm I find the most fun in creating dynamic challenges and observing how the players tease them apart. Dice and player choice tell the most compelling stories, and I tend to be hands off as far as fudging numbers or the game for or against the party. All that being said, a good game adapts to it's players and vice versa. If the crew wants a particular style or mode of play I think a good GM shapes around that. So that's what I do.

I once ran a session...

Where my players statted themselves (Isekai style) and then passed their character sheet around the table and had the other players stat them. Their final scores were the average of the 3 stat lines. Absolutely hilarious table talk

I prep by

Research! Knowing a setting and the environment can help me improvise the rest.

Rules are...

Mechanics and Narrative go hand in hand!

Quentin Overturf's ideal table

I love when my players are inquisitive about the world, pry the floorboards loose and pull those gold panels off the walls! Tell me about your characters special training and how we could work that into a subclass. I have the most fun presenting an interesting world and seeing how the players interact with it.

I think min/maxing...

I like the idea of builds and skills and things like that! I think it helps give the game longevity and keeps the mechanics fresh and interesting.

My perfect party mix is

One that the players have the most fun with! 6 Rogues? Great! Barbarian Beef Party? Also Great! 3 Wizards and their Paladin Dad? Sounds like a field trip.

My table is not the place for...

I don't do a lot of political intrigue! It could be that I've just not played in a game where that content has grabbed me. Intricate NPC plotlines are cool but I think those arise organically by having opposed goals as opposed to writing them in.
