About MimicsForge

Hey there and welcome to the Mimic's Forge! You can call me Mimic or Cal and I'll be your weaver of tales and cultivator of chaos should you take an interest. I'm an LGBTQIA+, neurodivergent DM with an utter hyperfixation on D&D and TTRPGs as a whole. I studied theatre in college and have since developed a love of collaborative worldbuilding and storytelling to create immersive experiences. My biggest goal is to facilitate multiple parties of players in a single game world all leaving their mark in one way or another. D&D is absolutely an escape from the boring real world, but who said that means it has to be mindless? If you're invested and having a good time, my job is done! I run various systems, primarily D&D 5e and some of its off-shoots for franchises like Star Wars and Mass Effect and I have limited experience playing Pathfinder. When I'm not DMing I'm likely delving into various games, mostly RPGs both old and recent or I'm designing and plotting like the little gremlin I am because my brain lacks an off switch. If that sounds like your kind of vibe, take a seat, grab a flagon and let's see what shenanigans we can create together!

I got started GMing...

To pick up the slack from a previous GM. A group of us weren't having a great time so when we wanted to continue, I happened to step up organizing and running the game.

When I'm not running games I'm...

Often playing around with various character designs or worldbuilding. Even outside of actually running the game, all of the various aspects that go into session prep are just general hobbies for me.

How MimicsForge runs games

I love a good blend of tactical combat and exploring deep character development. There's something really satisfying about the challenge of weaving a bunch character backstories both into my existing world and into each other to form a large, long term plot for players to enjoy. Rules as written and even rules as intended are great when they work out but they don't all the time. Sometimes they're a roadblock to something incredibly fun and creative. Typically I'll rule with the narrative in mind rather than sticking to one side or another. I also do my best to rule in the moment and fix any issues that pop up going forward, looking things up after the fact to correct them rather than holding the game up to do so. Player happiness and interesting and immersive narratives are and always will be my two biggest priorities. Anything else can be worked out as we go!

MimicsForge's ideal table

My table is incredibly free-flow. I try my best to see the rules as vague guidelines and just enjoy having a lot of fun. I've been told I'm fairly good at bringing new players into the hobby but personally I'd say I work best with people who have a similar mindset regarding the rules and at least a basic understanding of how the game works.

If you're into ___, you're going to love my table

Deep, possibly overwhelming worldbuilding and a focus on storytelling before anything else

I love it when a player

Can get hyperfocused on my setting or creative during session. The biggest compliment to me is player investment and curiosity because I enjoy talking lore and worldbuilding as much as I enjoy the game itself.

My table is not the place for...

Incredibly strict following of the rules. They're a guideline for me and nothing more. I do my best to stick to the rules in general so long as they don't hinder us having a great time. The moment it bogs down the game is the moment I choose to just make a decision and run with it.
