About Malt

I’ve been playing Dungeons & Dragons for 4 years and Dungeon Mastering for 3. I recently ran a long-term home campaign of Odyssey of the Dragonlords, where I’ve guided my players from level 1 to 9. Since moving back to Canada, I have recently started a second home campaign. Along the way, I’ve learned how to bring a sandbox world to life with epic boss fights, mini dungeon crawls, social intrigue, stealth missions, and even a hex-crawl escape sequence. I enjoy tailoring published adventures to fit my table, taking the best parts and reshaping what doesn’t, to keep every session fresh and exciting. My goal as a DM is to create a collaborative and immersive story where players feel like true heroes.

I got started GMing...

I started GMing after our DM moved away shortly after we finished Lost Mine of Phandelver. Rather than let the group end, I stepped in to keep the game going. That led to running Odyssey of the Dragonlords as a long-term home campaign for the next two years.

How Malt runs games

At my table, you can expect a mix of tactical combat and varied encounters that keep things fresh; boss battles, dungeon crawls, chases, political intrigue, stealth missions, and even the occasional heist. I like to go beyond the basics of species and class, giving characters opportunities for customization through personalized magic items, unique boons, or story-driven rewards. Roleplay at my games is flexible; I tend to reflect the players. If you enjoy speaking in character, I’ll match that energy; if you prefer describing actions in third person, I’ll roll with that too. I run mostly rules as written, with any homebrew or rulings clearly explained so you always know where you stand. I’m also new-player friendly, making sure everyone understands the rules without slowing the game down. To bring the world to life, I lean on technology: detailed maps, tokens, and read-aloud text that paint a vivid picture of the adventure. My goal is to create memorable, collaborative stories with plenty of exciting challenges and a balance of fun for every type of player. I don’t use impossible challenges or instant-death traps; in the early game I’ll pull punches if needed, and by the mid game I ensure the party has access to the components to spells like revivify so setbacks never mean the story has to end (just remember to protect your healer). My idea of a perfect adventuring day is when the party ends it exhausted, out of resources, and clinging to life; but alive nonetheless.

Rules are...

Rules are… primarily rules-as-written whenever possible, with occasional rules-as-intended clarifications when the intent is clearer than the text (such as with War Caster 2024). I also use a small number of homebrew tweaks, most notably a surprise system inspired by Baldur’s Gate 3.

Malt's ideal table

My table is beginner-friendly and welcoming, with a strong focus on rules-as-written play. The game is a balanced mix of exploration and tactical combat, with encounters designed to be engaging and occasionally challenging rather than purely cinematic. Occasional, low stakes role play. Players who fit well at my table enjoy thoughtful character building, meaningful mechanical choices, and learning how their abilities interact with the game’s systems. I support this with limited, intentional homebrew, such as custom items that enhance and grow alongside your class, without undermining core balance.

I love it when a player

Is passionate about building their character, choosing magic items, feats, etc. and is clearly thinking about it between sessions.

I think min/maxing...

is perfectly acceptable so long as all the players do it!
