About Kat Kruger
Hello, misadventurers! You may recognize me as the former Dungeon Master at the family-friendly d20 Dames podcast. When I'm not running games, I'm a freelance game designer and author at my owner-operated company, Steampunk Unicorn Studio. I've worked for clients such as Hasbro, Larian Studios, Wizards of the Coast, MCDM, Hit Point Press, and Roll & Play Press, and my game credits include: Blood in Baldur’s Gate, Betrayal at House on the Hill 3E, HeroQuest, and Divinity Original Sin the Board Game. In the sphere of TTRPG actual play, I was the Dungeon Master on the family-friendly podcast d20 Dames, and I've played numerous roles, most notably as The Countess on Adventure They Wrote. My latest book, How to Be More D&D (Running Press Books), is an officially licensed publication through Dungeons & Dragons (Wizards of the Coast). I was also a Creative Laureate with the Storytelling Collective in 2022.

I became a GM because
I enjoy the collaborative storytelling aspect of TTRPGs whether it's joyful and whimsical, or dark and haunting.
When I'm not running games I'm...
designing games either as a freelancer or for my personal projects. Much of my day is also spent as a stay-at-home mom but I love playing board games and video games, reading (though not as much as I'd like), and cross-stitching.
How Kat Kruger runs games
What you'll get at my table is cozy, family-friendly content. My games are social and exploration heavy, with low combat. I prefer the words over swords style of conflict resolution but that doesn't necessarily mean "no combat." Occasionally, I'll also run scarier gothic horror content. Unless otherwise requested, most of my games take place in the theater of the mind rather than making extensive use of online tools. Although I love telling stories using character voices, there's no expectation for players to do so. Thinking outside the box is always welcome at my table and I embrace the "rule of cool" within reason.

Kat Kruger's ideal table
My tables are filled with players who are genuinely interested in telling a group story, seeing other characters succeed, while also appreciating there are many ways to solve a problem and not all of them require combat. Roleplay is always appreciated but that doesn't mean doing voices or being a performer.

Studio Ghibli or gothic horror. These are my two modes. While they may seem far apart, they share common factors at my tables that revolve around stories with heart and depth.
