About Joshua
Hello, heroes and villains! I am Joshua, a lifelong film, theatre, and fantasy nerd. I was introduced to 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons during the midst of my teenage years and have been jumping at every opportunity to play in the years that have followed. I've garnered a great deal of experience as a dungeon master both in person and online, running games for dozens of players, whether they be brand new or heavily experienced. In the last three years, I've dedicated a huge amount of my time into creating an original high fantasy setting, inviting my players to tell a completely original story each session. I am very confident in running intense, unique combats, as I am in role-playing diverse, fun, and memorable NPCs, and put a great deal of care into each session I run. I do my best to incorporate my players into the adventures they go on and give everybody plenty of moments to shine. I'm hoping to use StartPlaying to find first time players and give them an opportunity to both express themselves and learn the game in a friendly and encouraging environment. There'll be plenty of surprises along the way, and if all goes right, you might even surprise me!

I got started GMing...
online, actually! My first game was running Curse of Strahd for a group of friends over Discord, and I got hooked! Within six months, I had crafted a setting that I've been using running adventures in for many different groups, both in-person and online.
My favorite shows/movies are
a mixed bag. I adore Wes Anderson! Fantastic Mr Fox and The French Dispatch are personal favourites. Beyond Wes, the lush visuals of Studio Ghibli often make for excellent campaign inspiration. Howl's Moving Castle is another all-time favourite.
How Joshua runs games
At my table, my vision is to give players a wide array of experiences using the 5e rules (with room for bending). As a theatre kid, the role-play is what made me first fall in love with D&D, and I love to create characters with well-realised motivations and striking personalities for players to interact with. I invite players to reciprocate however they feel comfortable, whether that's just describing their character's actions or going all out and adopting a silly voice. I create battlemaps to illustrate high fidelity combats, and pay great attention to detail using initiative trackers and statblocks to keep combat fair and consistent. I encourage creativity on the battlefield, and more often than not will allow my players to explore unorthodox ideas providing they don't stray too far from the realm of the reasonable. I like to cater the difficulty of an adventure around the experience of my players. New players will have much more margin of error, which allows them to fully explore the consequences of their decisions without too harsh a punishment. That being said, don't get complacent! I'm not afraid to have a character die at my table, in fact I love it! Rest assured, I won't have your character die unfairly. I love homebrew, expect a LOT of unique magic items and monsters. I've even made a handful of subclasses if you're feeling brave! There's so much for you to discover at my table.

I love it when a player
invents a part of their character backstory on the fly. You're telling this story too! Don't be afraid to invent and play with ideas!
