About me
If you recognize me, it may be because you bought a game from me! As a retailer at my Modern Myths shops and as a convention vendor with Indie Press Revolution and my own Jim Likes Games booths, I've been involved in the making, designing, selling and playing of RPGs for more than 40 years. I've run every edition of D&D, as well as a host of indie and small press games in my shops, at cons (I'm a co-founder of Indie Games om Demand at Origins) and online. I love all sort of RPGs, from hardcore trad to the most esoteric Indies. If there's something you're looking for that you don't see listed on StartPlaying, feel free to ask! All of my sessions are played with a robust set of Safety Tools that make sure we all have fun (including me!), and I love teaching new players.
GM Style
My favorite approach is character-driven plots with lots of player input. Expect to answer questions and help build our world and its inhabitants throughout the entire course of our campaign. I'm most comfortable with narrative-forward systems that still provide mechanical backing (like Powered by the Apocalypse, Cortex, or Forged in the Dark). I require Safety Tools and an inclusive table, but I never require homework.

Storytelling
I have played literally hundreds of sessions with Jim as the GM over the past 7 years, including the entirety of Night Witches, a dozen-plus sessions of a Scott Pilgrim hack of Hearts Of Wulin, another dozen-plus playtest sessions of Checkpoint Midnight and so on. It's difficult for me to think of any weaknesses in Jim's GMing, but his strengths include collaborative worldbuilding, treating players as the experts of their character's part of the world (e.g. how magic works, how the guild/secret society/cult/etc. operates and what it does, and so on), player and character agency, checking in with players to clearly establish the stakes/consequences of a roll or decision before the player commits to it (e.g. "If you do this and fail, X group will send assassins after you/the NKVD will take you in for questioning/etc."), and diligent use of safety tools. I trust Jim enough as both a GM and person that I would let my kid play in his games without monitoring or supervision. I'm not sure I can offer a better assessment of Jim's GMing and storytelling than that.
I've been playing in online TRPGs with Jim as GM since 2018. He's a rock-solid GM with a firm grasp of the rules of dozens and dozens of TTRPGs. His spotlight management is fantastic, and his ability to improvise while letting players lead is phenominal. Seriously: Jim is one of the best GMs out there!!
I’ve had the pleasure of playing in several of Jim’s games over the years as well as being a fellow player with him. Jim is amazing at taking what you want to see and weaving it into the narrative seamlessly. All his NPCs have vivid personalities and truly seem different from each other. I will also say, Jim and I had a super fun romance in Absurdia done with good safety and consent. He’s done DIE and Apocalypse Keys with me to name a couple. I cannot recommend playing with Jim enough, I know I will be!
