About J Dinkhouse

I love running games, I have about 5 years of GM experience running Shadowdark, 5e, Daggerheart, Pirate Borg, Cy_Borg, Marvel Multiverse RPG, and more. I run Theater of the Mind only, with looser combat and an emphasis on creativity and fun over precise tactics and crunch. Most players, even ones who previously enjoyed VTTs, find my style engaging and exciting. Come join one of my games and see if it's a good fit for you!

I got started GMing...

because I wanted to understand game design and I thought that running D&D would be a good place to start. 5 years later, I have run hundreds of sessions with players of all ages, and I am always looking for new and exciting TTRPG experiences.

My 3 systems I'd bring to a desert island would be

Shadowdark, Cy_Borg, and Daggerheart

People are always surprised when I tell them

I have only been a player in a handful of games. I am a Forever GM by choice, because this is the role I love the most.

How J Dinkhouse runs games

I am roleplay-heavy, rules-light. I am probably going to let you try to do whatever crazy thing you are trying (as long as I believe it could be possible). I love doing voices for characters (and I'm told I'm pretty good at it). I play Theater of the Mind only, so don't expect me to break out the VTT. I want you inside the mind of your character, imagining the setting before you, not looking at a top-down map and an icon.

I prep by

thinking about the villains, their goals, and then crafting a world with opportunities for the PC to interact with and potentially disrupt those plans. I focus on building the pieces to facilitate emergent gameplay, so that the dice and the players' actions drive the storytelling.

Rules are...

less important than rulings. I always try to find a way to make the game system reflect the desired experience, not the other way around.

J Dinkhouse's ideal table

I want players who are engaged with the game, open to what comes out of the dice and the interaction between the players and the GM, and not looking to fight against the game we are all playing together.
