About Jacoby

I am a moderately experienced DM who has participated and run games using Dungeons & Dragons 5e (2014) and Tales of the Valiant rulesets since 2019. I am an especially enthusiastic fan of Third-Party Published materials (following review for balance of course). While I have historically run live-play tables in person, I aim to bring the same level of care and attention to any game I run. I am eager to assist in helping my players find a groove for their character regardless of their preferred playstyle.

I became a GM because

I became a GM because I wanted to give players the opportunity to express themselves, have freedom to create compelling characters they love, and more than anything else, enjoy TTRPGs as close to no cost as I could possible allow them to.

I got started GMing with the endeavor to help players enjoy playing Dungeons & Dragons with the freedom to create their own characters in their own vision. I endeavor to impose as few restrictions on the creativity of my players and aim to help their characters feel like they are truly their own.

When I'm not running games I'm engaged in a fulltime job, session prep, and music production as another side hobby.

How Jacoby runs games

I try my best to strike a balance based on input from my players between roleplay and combat. Each group is different, and it is my goal to create a table that is as enjoyable as possible. Further, I recognize that every player at my tables (whether in-person or online) deserve respect for their individual needs and desires and do my best to respect not only their time commitments, but their individual desires for what they want to see out of my games. I generally do not permit PVP or Adult-themed content at my tables to ensure that anyone of any age can enjoy the game and that there is no out-of-character conflict that comes as a result of in-character conflict.

I deal with rules issues by...

I aim to deal with rules issues by finding the best and fairest solution possible while still creating opportunities for players to achieve their pursuits with a reasonable degree of expectation.

My games focus on...

My games focus on striking the right balance between roleplaying and combat based on the feedback of the players of my games. As a default I tend to lean slightly more towards roleplaying for the initial phase of any story to ensure that players are able to find their groove with their character(s).

Rules are...

Rules are important for game balance, but shouldn't detract from the occasional epic moment or "rule of cool" situation where warranted. I am flexible with adjusting rules (including incorporating home rules) to the needs of the table to ensure everyone is able to enjoy the game.

Jacoby's ideal table

An ideal table for me is a consistent group of 3-5 players who come to the table and enjoy losing themselves in the fun of the game. Most of my sessions are not as "strict-to-lore" when it comes to the settings I run to allow for my players to fill the world with the characters they want to play. I also love to integrate third-party published materials by well established brands like Kobold Press, Ghostfire Gaming, Mage Hand Press, and Hit Point Press in order to enrich the experience, make characters have a broad horizon of unique options to set themselves apart, and make the world feel bigger than just a book.

I love it when a player

I love it when a player gives me feedback--positive or negative. Constructive criticism is absolutely crucial to grow and learn, and I take all constructive criticism and use it to better the experience at my tables constantly. Don't be afraid to tell me what you'd love to see from/in my games!

I think min/maxing...

I think min/maxing is not my personal style as a player, but I am completely open to my players building their characters in whatever manner they deem fit. I try my best to adapt the plot and/or balance of the game based on the feedback and observations I make running the game.

My table is not the place for...

My table is not the place for interpersonal drama. I aim to help you feel welcome at my table no matter what your walk of life is. I do not want to ever create or maintain an environment where you do not feel welcome and in a safe place, especially when it comes to everyone else at the table.
